Solution
Nvida GPUs on laptop almost always use a hybrid graphics system called Optimus. The Intel integrated video always drives the screen. The Nvidia GPU acts as a co-processor. When you play a game, it draws a frame, then passes the completed frame to the Intel video. The Intel video then displays it on the screen. This is how you're able to pick and choose which programs use the Nvidia card, which use Intel, and run both types of programs simultaneously.

Doing this requires tight integration of the Nvidia and Intel video drivers. The generic Nvidia drivers you'd install for a desktop video card usually will not work. You best bet is to stick with the Nvidia and Intel video drivers Asus releases on your laptop's support page...

You best bet is to stick with the Nvidia and Intel video drivers Asus releases on your laptop's support page. You can try Nvidia's generic drivers (I've had it work on my laptop a couple times), but make sure you also update the Intel video drivers to the latest at the same time. And it's not guaranteed to work, so have the latest Nvidia and Intel video drivers from Asus' support site ready as a backup.

The exception is that certain gaming laptops allow you to disable the Intel integrated video, and run purely off the Nvidia GPU. In that case, you can treat it like a desktop with an Nvidia GPU, and install the generic Nvidia drivers.
