The stupidest thing about all this stems from the following statement:

'By the time you have it, it's obsolete'

Right now there are probably several other supercomputer designs being finetuned, ready for construction. But because they are working on todays technology boundaries by the time its actually built there will be another design ready for construction that bests it based on the technology that is out at the time. No matter how long a company tries, even if they get thier supercomputer to number 1, it will only be there until the next company releases thiers.

I won't deny that this is indeed an impressive acomplishment, I mean, 17petaflops! It was only a few years ago everyone was raving about the newest supercomputer that performed at 1Teraflop! I give it another 3 yeras before the first Exaflop supercomputer is released, because the rate we are going at at the minute is immense. We're basically doubling supercomputer performance every year.

I bet you can play a kickass game of minesweeper on it though. B-)

Obsolete is a strong term to use for this IMO. Sure, they aren't the biggest kids on the block for long, but they're still useful for good amounts of time.
