Personally, I re-evaluate every time, but I find myself leaning a bit toward ATI for two reasons:

Bad past experiences with Nvidia cards.

I really like the All in Wonder cards, and Nvidia provides no equivalent.

That being said, I have no problem recommending or buying Nvidia cards if they fit the situation (I.E. an 8800 for DX10)

I'd say I'm slightly biased towards Nvidia due to the fact I've had better luck with their chipsets over ATI's.

First video card I owned besides a diamond stealth 4meg was a 24meg geforce 2, ages ago... don't even remember the model, second was a geforece 2 mx400, geforce 4 mx440, geforce 2 ultra 64mb, radeon 9000 (hive cluster crash, went back to nvidia) fx5200, burned up, fx5700 ultra, fx5950, 6600gt, 6800xt, 9600 pro 256mb, x1300 512, and now an x1900gt (which currently has some minor minor artifacting, but I believe that's due to my 2 monitors being next to eachother, not sure.. quake 4 has horizontal refresh lines that start halfway down and go to the bottom of the screen, never had problems with my 6800xt. What's funny, is every ATI card I've ever used in any of my own systems has had small problems (minus the 9000 hive cluster crash in xp pro) that usually don't bother me, while all my nvidia's perform perfectly. Professionally recommend what fits in a customer's budget.

me? i am in no way biased in either way. however, if i had to choose between a product that is pretty much the same eg, 1 or 2% difference in performance i would take the ATI hands down as i could use my old x1600 pro as a physics processor, like they demoed last year sumtime. However if i had to choose between the x1950 and the 8800 (excluding the fact i'd need a new PSU) id defiantly take the later.

I choose the best/better product, if i don't it is simply because i did not do my research :|

I don't know how else to say it, being brand loyal is crazy, it flies in the face of logic.
Damn straight it does...

Super agreeance. And I like the way you said it even.

Well its quite logical to gain a liking to a company or brand that has given you personally good products over time. Some ppl are ATI fanboys(myself inculded) because they got a bad nvidia card and don't like things about nvidia. Where as every time they use an ATI card is was good for them. Same for Nvidia fanboys.

The optimal choice would be to make your decision generation by generation looking at what both sides have to offer. I think saying liking one more than the other is not logical is illogical in itself. Though all of this is just my opinion don't put to much emphasis on it.

i bought the 6800gt for one of my builds as it ran doom 3 better at the time. that died on me so i bought a x1950pro as it gave me the BpB at the time. i intend to upgrade in 4 months and i will buy whatever runs DX10 the best when i upgrade. although i would say im slightly on AMDs side as i think they have the better Tech at the moment

Well said my friend. However, buying an NVidia card with that stupid little tinkerbell on the box is like buying a pink and purple striped polo shirt: it screams....I'm a FAIERE!

I see what you are saying but just because you had a problem with one or even two cards/drivers/whatever other problems there could have been, doesn't mean that all the cards that that certain company makes should be avoided.

That's arguing like my frind that saw the THG video of the cpu's where they take the heatsinks off. Just because that AMD cpu didn't make it he'll never buy it in his life.

I have a slight inclination towards ATI, simply since I've often owned their top end cards, and they've done me well (And I like red better than green). Of course I would never let this stand in the way of a purchase, price/performance reigns supreme.

I started with an Nvidia TNT2, and like an idiot was disheartened when it wouldn't run Morrowind. As one of my very first personal upgrades, I read up on the hottest of hot, the 9700Pro, popped it in and was amazed. It lasted for several years and is still in my mother's rig where it's finally starting to have problems, until Oblivion came along. X850XT it was since I didn't think I would be able to afford hopping on the PCI-Express train for awhile. With my last build I went with a 7600GT, and have been very pleased with it aswell. I've also learned the value of the mid-range, and probably won't be going high-end again, so with the 8600GTs and mid-range R600s around the corner, I may be back on the red side again.

And personally, I think this is a good, fun thread that won't lead to flame wars unless people just start acting like idiots. Since subjective bias is inherently stated forthright, no one can really challenge anyone's statement unless people start getting too forceful with their opinions. Come on now.

I've always had ATI cards... had both good and bad experiences with them, good as in with an OC'ed 9600XT that's still going strong today and an x1900XT, bad as in a X800GTO going faulty (though I think I killed it when I tried OCing it, so it mostly my bad it went faulty). Even then, I lean towards ATI because in my eyes, their products tend to be of better quality (though Nvidia do have really nice cards as well). And since ATI is a part of AMD, I guess that makes me an AMD fan now.

Price is most important to me because they both put out good products. I like ATI AIW/TV Tuner boards that NVidia can't compete readily with. However, NVidia owns the game market for driver compatibility. I think the competition is what I love most.

So, what do you think of Gainward then.

I like Ati. 8)
Maybe the red board on the Gainward 7800GS+ got me. :?

having used both brands for several years I'm kinda neutral...

but to be honest right now im a bit more nVidia sided because I have a 8800gtx. (after you break you piggy bank for something you must love it lol)

LOL, nice work having red, green and green, red

I would have say I have a slightly preverence for Nvidia I've had 4 Nvidia cards and only 2 ATI cards. The ATI cards tend to be slower to market and require more power than the Nvidia cards.

Geez, after reading some of these responses I feel like a bit of a newb... I hardly ever upgrade my video card.
The first PC I purchased had an ATI Rage card, I remember wanting to get a Matrox card at the time, but the vendor told me that they had lots of problems with them.
My second card was a Voodoo Banshee. It was not a terrible card, but I had a hell of a time finding drivers and support for it a lot of the time.
Third, was an NVidia Geforce Ti4400. That was a huge step up from the banshee. I replaced it a while back with the X800 XL. I'm still fairly happy with it, and I probably won't replace it until I have to upgrade to Vista (or hopefully whatever comes after).
After all that, I find myself favouring the ATI stuff. Can't say why for sure, they've both been good to me, (although that Banshee was the red-headed stepchild of the bunch).

I'm running both ATI in ym HTPC and nVidia noted in my sig...don't care about brand, it's whatever is the "best" I can afford when I need a new card...

I agree this is lame thread but couldn't help myself

+1 post for me!

I had to rate myself as neutral but more because I am biased in both directions. My cards have been Nvidia for quite sometime, because I had some bad luck with drivers on an old ATI card. But I am an AMD fan (and Linux fan) because I have developped an aversion to "Wintel", but don't want the prefab inflexibilty of a Mac. So, I now find myself wanted to buy ATI next just because AMD bought them. Now I know, I should base my decisions on facts, stats and prices, but I'm just not rational enough for all that. Despite my love of computers, I am not quite that calculating and sometimes am driven by these odd things called "feelings". So I am neutral not because I am unbiased but rather because I have strong bias in both directions. I suppose eventually I will have to decide...

I'm neutral... I've bought pretty much everything, and found most of the problems to be w/my system or drivers rather than the card.

Cards I've owned:
(some cheap matrox marvel standin while I was waiting for a card)
TNT2 32 MB
Voodoo5 64MB
GeForce 4 (not sure which)
Currently: radeon 9800proSE

Most of the earlier ones I've felt were lacking because they couldn't support the games/stuff I was getting into. Now the 9800 is starting to do the same.

A lot of it has to do with WHEN you bought your video card, as they leap-frog each other.

My VC upgrade path: 9800-> x850 -> x1900 happened to coincide with Ati being the price/performance leader.

A few months earlier/later I would probably be an Nvidia fanboy

Although I'm neutral, I prefered ATI for better image quality (till 8800 series), but switched to Geforce (7800GS atm) because of World of Warcraft :) I'm fan of this game and its better tuned for nvidia than to ATI because of shamefull "The Way It's Meant To Be Played" program...

I'll wait for next DX10 cards refresh to buy some sexy G81 or R6xx card 😀
