I said mantle works for low-end stuff. I didn't say they couldn't make a faster driver. I just wish they had done THAT which works on all your games with ZERO dev work required, instead of wasting energy on Mantle which requires extra development work on EVERY game using it with zero financial incentive for the developer (aside from an AMD check, which they can't afford much). The Nvidia way works without dev headaches and across all games. You should be chastising AMD for wasting R&D on something nobody will use without payment vs. a driver that isn't in PHASE 3. I would have rather had them spend ALL these resources on better drivers as clearly there is no need for Mantle as NV has shown here and with OpenGL at GTC. AMD says mantle can do 10x draw calls, while NV said OpenGL can do up to 15x, so even if they're lying and it's 10x they're about even. They showed an example that got 4x perf with just a few lines of code changed.
The gains in star swarm show you can do the same things as mantle even in dx11 as NV shows. That game was Mantle's showcase best case scenario massively using draw calls (and best shown on low cpus, only a few games exhibit this type of behavior and none like star swarm so far). NV clearly pulled a mantle with dx11 right? Wouldn't you rather have had AMD develop a driver like NV's that affected a ton of games instead of just 1-2 (though admittedly it will basically affect only the games decent mantle optimizations would affect since NV's driver seems to affect the same issues as mantle)? This isn't a win/win. AMD will fall further behind in drivers that will show in MANY games and maybe win one or two special mantle games (if that, not winning anything now with 780ti vs 290/290x). You need to be better in all games along with the other guy as people don't want to be told it will be good one day in a few games IF devs use it. I'd rather be saying "we're 10-50% better in ALL games today" etc. While AMD is blowing time on Mantle (that either Dx12 or OpenGL will kill at some point), NV is pulling ahead across the board with drivers that work on everything. I'll take drivers every day in this type of war and they don't appear to be able to win even in mantle stuff except in a few cases most don't use. It shouldn't take over 2yrs to get your hardware fully working (will phase3 fix dx9/10 games, 30% using xp still etc?).
