Nvidia Control panel opens for a few seconds then closes.

When I open the nvidia control panel it opens for a few seconds, looks empty and then closes, no crash, no not responding, nothing. I've reinstalled drivers, updated pc and restarted. Nothing seems to work. xD I'm trying to force a game to downscale a higher resolution but I can't get into the control panel.Seems to of happened after I upgraded to the i7. it is a fresh install of windows too.

i7 8086k
asus strix 1080 8gb
16gb 3ghz ddr4 ram

Well I figured it out, if anyone else has this issue, try updating your bios and then reinstalling your GPU software/drivers. worked for me.
