Hello everyone :), Ok for i have no idea how long, but ive been trying numerous things to update my nvidia card. I have a Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS with the driver currently install 310.70. any other drivers above 310.70 just dont want to update :/
Everytime i try update to another driver it goes for a while then says "Display Driver" then it says Failed, everytime!
Ive tried so many things, Driver sweeper, removing it from add/remove programs, manually installing them, getting windows to install them, and i have no idea what to do
I have a Windows XP and I would love if someone could help me out with this problem!
Thanks :).

Solution
my suggestion - leave whichever works on it ... the card's way too weak to game on any modern titles anyway so what's the point,
new drivers will carry slight new game title improvements for new gen cards... for you there won't be any difference
There could be 2 reasons for that.
1) Virus has corrupted the system and you're unable to place crucial display driver files in system related folders.
2) Physical problem with the card.

I never thought virus could do such a thing but few weeks back i had a nasty virus which even forced me to believe that my card was dying, which wasn't the case, but after some further digging i realized that it was a virus pulling such crap. Even WEI was unable to load.

Thanks for replies :) What is DDU?
oh and I dont know, because it succesfully installed the 310.90 graphics card, but the installation itself failed, but it still installed 310.90 + nvidia control panel, every update above 310.90 fails,
oh and I know this is irrelevant but what makes a game load faster?

How do I use it? (I don't want to stuff my whole display up)
and btw, when i update drivers, if im on 310.90 do I have to update to the next driver, or can I just go straight to the lastest version driver?

boot into safe mode to use the software. last time i tried i just let the software doing it's job. no need to manually uninstall the driver yourself.

usually driver update can be done without the need to uninstall the previous one. but some people afraid if some bug or problem will carry over without clean installation. and in some cases it does so some people prefer to do clean installation each time they update their drivers

Ok, my screens really laggy at the moment, i'll tell you the results of the update im about to try :)
edit - I just tried to install the driver 332.21 and it says Graphics Driver - Failed
and everything else says "not installed"
this is so annoying!!

i had this happen on a damaged gt9800 that needed cooking in the oven (yes- this is actually a thing) ... so it can be physical damage to the card,
other than that - a virus is possible... i once got one that was mining bitcoin on my pc and causing all sorts of instability and 100% load on gpu...
one last thing - if you followed the instructions on driver sweeper and went to gpedit.msc and enabled the windows policy that prevents automatic driver installation when you boot into windows - you won't be abel to install the driver yourself as well while the policy is enabled - the setup fails in the middle similarly to what you described....

thanks for the reply, for my driver update it failed around 1/2 - 1/4 through the thing, what do you mean install the driver yourself as well while the policy is enabled? sorry im not catching your drift and sorry as you see by my name im a noob at this..

in that case don't worry about it-

in the group policy editor (run -> gpedit.msc ) there's an option to disable windows automatic driver installation - because even when you uninstall the driver and clean the system with driver sweeper or similar - as soon as you boot into windows it automatically installs some default nvidia driver...
that's what you can prevent if you want a 100% clean driver install... but after windows has loaded you have to go in there and manually disable the policy again otherwise the driver setup will fail halfway during the install you do yourself, since the policy will prevent it from happening
i'll guess you have a different issue...

Ok il try, and if I do update, if I have 310.70 installed do I have to go to the next driver that was realised or can I go straight to he newest driver update?
EDIT ok so I just tried to type in gpedit.msc and it came up with "Windows a not find 'gpedit.msc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly. And the try again. To search for a file click the start button, and then click search" ??
Btw I'm on windows xp home edition

doesnt matter which version you have - you can always install the newest ... i would go for the WHQL drivers on nvidia website in your case ... beta could have issues, also make sure you picked the right driver for your windows and make sure it's not 64bit if you have 32bit windows and vice versa,
about gpedit.msc ... this is from windows 7 or maybe vista ... and still not sure if the lower editions like home etc. even include it...
you dont need to worry about this since it's not the cause of your problem... i honestly think your gpu is broken, the only way to be sure is to put it in a nother pc... if it works fine there then go back and try to fix the problems on yours

Hmmm, no idea how to take out my gpu tbh.. But it's weird, it installs 310.90 good, and then for 314.07, it installs the whole way, then out of no where it says display driver failed

my suggestion - leave whichever works on it ... the card's way too weak to game on any modern titles anyway so what's the point,
new drivers will carry slight new game title improvements for new gen cards... for you there won't be any difference
