Last night while my PC was sitting idle, one monitor stopped displaying and the resolution of my primary monitor dropped: small desktop icons became large. Device Manager showed that the GPUs didn't have installed drivers. So, I tried to open Nvidia Control Panel, but it would not open, regardless of whether I tried the desktop icon or by right clicking in the System Tray. So I went to Nvidia's website and tried to manually download and install the drivers. It went through the routine but ended with "Failed to initialize display driver wrapper!" So then I went to the Device Manager, right clicked the first GPU and tried to get Windows to search for the drivers and install them. Windows found drivers and went through an installation process, but delivered this message: "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device. The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" After much frustration, I did a System Restore, which returned my graphics (but now Chrome won't launch).
Both Trend Micro and Malwarebytes report that my PC is free of malware. So what's up with Nvidia drivers refusing to install?!
