Nvidia GeForce 8400gs upgrade?

Hello tom's Hardware community i am new to pc building and upgrading but i've been looking and researching items and slowly learning the tricks and trades to it. But after trying to play some games (goat simulator in this case) i noticed everything but my graphics card met recommended requirements. And this game ran so choppy i couldn't really play it. my specs on my PC are

Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 8400gs
CPU: Intel(R) core(TM)2 quad CPU Q6600 @2.40GHz (4CPUs), -2.4GHz
OS: Windows 7 64bit
Power supply: 365watts
Ram: i think around 8gig ram
Memory: 1TB
DirectX: DirectX 11

Now if i have forgotten anything please feel free to ask about it and if you have any other items that around the same price range but you feel are better value i would love to hear them!!! my pc is also a Hp compaq elite 8300 computer, i believe everything except the CPU is still stock so im working on making this thing a great build.

Please post your budget and location.
The card you have linked to is out of stock.
The card you linked to will almost certainly overload the current power supply, even if the PSU has a 6 pin PCI-E power lead, which I doubt.
I've one of those old Q6600s as a dual boot backup/plaything, it's a decent part but very much showing its age now, so don't expect miracles from the poor old thing.

For now top pick: GTX750 (not the 'Ti' version).
A DDR5 GT740 or R7 250 will be $30-40 (I'm assuming USA) cheaper and very close to the GT9800 you linked to (actually they're a little quicker).

My budget is around 100-150 or so and yes the good old USA is my location, and i had also looked at the gtx 750 how ever it was the ti version. No harm in bringing a little more Iron into the firefights. If you can go for a GTX750Ti (without the 6 pin PCI-E requirement) then go for it.
Reason I was a little bothered about the PSU is its age, they lose output over time so if it is the one the system came with it'll have lost some of its output and with 365Watts when new it wasn't exactly a powerhouse to start with.
As long as you don't plan on any mad overclocking exploits it'll be fine though, the GTX750 Ti draws less than 75 Watts and the CPU won't go above (I think) 100, even at maximum load.
Only consider a replacement if you're feeling particularly paranoid about it.

From my perspective (I'm in the England) there's nothing 'old' about the USA.

I don't plan any anytype of over clocking, but thank you for all your help. Im now off to find what type of graphic connectors i have, I know you already have been a tremendous help but any advice on what pins are what? like the 6 pin PCI-E that would be like 3 pins over 3 pins correct?

I've unselected me as solution so you can keep the thread open and get more people inputting...It's getting late here in the UK and I need some zeds!
The Amazon card you linked to does not require a PCI-E lead, so don't worry about needing one, it gets all the power it needs directly from the PCI-E slot on the motherboard.
Don't worry about the PCI-E slot, they're pretty universal, so a PCI-E 3.0 card like the GTX750 Ti will fit an earlier slot, the electrical connections are identical from PCI-E 1.0 right through to the current 3.0 revision, the differences are elsewhere in the motherboard and its chipset/CPU.
One thing I will suggest is that you try to update the motherboard BIOS, you have a fairly old system and that can cause compatibility issues with new parts like the GTX750.

I honestly cant thank you enough for all your help, im looking to get a new case so the card will fit, Honestly again thank you so much i'll leave this thread open for a bit longer to see if i get any additional input on the situation

Exactly which system do you have? I've run a few quick searches on the 'net and they all show much later CPUs than yours and I know that the Q6600 won't fit the motherboards in those systems so I'm a little lost as to exactly which system you have. A photo or link will be handy.

Misclicked on your answer and put it as best, oops but anyway i did some looking and ran the dxdiag and it said my system model is a HP Compaq dc7800 Convertible Minitower but when i bring up the windows system window it says compaq 8300 sff, but upon doing a google search the HP Compaq dc7800 Convertible Minitower looks identical to the one im looking to upgrade, is that a problem of windows? or do you think i have some sort of Frankenstein PC? And perhaps thats why your searches came up with what they did

Never mind, I've unselected me...Sob.
We've had several here do a case swap because they have a strong system but can't upgrade it, SFF cases are fine in an office but if you want to swap it over from a Word/Excel machine to a gaming rig you quickly learn nothing fits or is stupidly expensive, so it's possible that's what has happened. Or you could have a Frankenstein, there's plenty out there so unless you can trace its history there's no way of knowing but don't feel bad, ALL pcs are Frankensteins if you think about it.

From the stuff I've dug up about it the mini tower should accept a normal card with no problems, it does look a little narrower than a full sized tower but that's not likely to be a issue.
