Nvidia GeForce EVGA GTX 670 FTW 2GB does not detect/boot with HDMI or DVI-D, only with DVI-I. PLEASE HELP!

Hi guys,

A little bit of background before i dive into the problem. My graphics card GTX 670 ftw used to crash the windows kernel driver every time my mouse was idle and it became a pain, therefore I RMA'd the card and got a new one. The new card did the same thing when I put it into the machine, so I was at a loss and luckily I found a thread that mentioned the same problem and it was in fact a process called ieghutil.exe or something along those lines stored in C://Temporary which is a form of malware that mines bitcoins and therefore maxes your grpahics card usage and crashes it. Once i got rid of that, everything was good! Which made me think I did not need to RMA my previous card in the first place!

Well onto the problem at hand, I had the new card going just fine on dual displays HDMI and DVI-D slots for about two days and then suddenly last night. I come to the computer and my HDMI screen was in sleep mode and when I went into the NV control panel app, it still showed my BENQ HDMI monitor but it could not be enabled. After a restart, things went downhill as my computer would not really boot into windows, no boot pictures would show up and It would just turn off after a minute. I tried reseating the card into the slot and clean some dust off the case fans etc but no avail.

What did work was using the DVI-I slot with my other DVI monitor (LG Flatron 2232TQ) and it worked and booted up fine but it will not detect HDMI any more whatsoever. Once i boot into windows using DVI-I, I can disconnect and put it into the DVI-D slot and it works the same BUT it will not boot when the cable is in the DVI-D slot.

I am sorry this post is rather long but I wanted to be precise and detailed so I can make it easier on you guys.

EDIT:

I bought another DVI-D cable and hooked it up to the gtx 670 and everything was going fine for a while and I was playing Bioshock Infinite etc and suddenly the monitor with the new cable in the DVI-D slot starts flickering etc. and then it dies like the HDMI too 🙁

Now I am stuck with one screen and every 15 minutes, the screen with DVI-D port will come on for maybe a minute before turning off saying there is no signal.

Since i cross-shipped RMA, my old card is still in the US about to be shipped to EVGA, should i stop that and get it sent here and maybe send this one back?

That usually means that there is an error with the card connectors and the system won't boot in order to prevent any shorting. Sadly, this might mean that you exchanged a good card for a bad card. Best bet- contact for rma.

But it boots with DVI-I and DVI-D works after boot, I am planning on getting a second DVI-D cable and using that instead of the HDMI. I just want a dual display, for productivity purposes. I game solely on one. And as I did mention it happened suddenly as windows was running!

There could be a power surge in your area that could have damaged the component. If you are good with wiring, I would check to see if there is any voltage coming out of the port. Also, check to see if nvidia control panel can detect that there is an hdmi port. You could always use a second dvi as you said, but don't forget that you paid good money for these cards and if they do not live up to your expectations, you can always use the warranty that came with them. I know I get really finicky when things don't work they way the are supposed to when they are expensive things.

Yeah that could be the case as there are loud pops of statuc sometimes coming through my sound system and no I am not good enough with wiring to do that im afraid. I have a multimeter here at work but I dont really know how I would use it to test it with the gfx card. The problem is I used to live in the States and now moved to New Zealand, but moved my computer with me. I did not want to risk getting stiffed by EVGA so I shipped my card to the US to my parents and RMA'd a new card to their house and they sent it here. It is just not viable for me to do that again given my financial situation. If Dual-DVI works I will be happy as a chappy, and I would just need to make it last till the new 700 series come out in 2014 and the good thing is this same card in NZ sells for about $800-1000 NZD (@ 0.84 USD) so I can sell it later on after an RMA (3 year warranty?). I am due for a visit to the US at the end of the year so I might as well during that time 😀

Glad I could help, if you play bf3, we should play a match sometime. Also, how is that internet over in New Zealand. The internet in the states is quite atrocious. I have 6 megabits down and my neighbors think I am a god.

Yeah I do actually just have to get around installing it all again. The internet is average at best here, i think I have ADSL2+ and can pull about 15-20 mbit/s which translates to about 1.8 megabytes/s download speed. Upload is only 1024 kbps 🙁 I pay $99 for unlimited a month though so quite dear.

Ill let you know how the dual-dvi's go after work today.

Just an update: I will be sending the replacement card back to EVGA and keeping my original one that should work, just waiting on it to be shipped to NZ. What do you guys think caused this? Should I take some precautions with my PC and set up and how I install the card?

Just do not want for it to happen again!

If I were you I would take the whole computer apart and put them back piece by piece. double check all the wires and make sure the opening end of some wires are not touching the case. and make sure you have enough power to power up the card and other components all together. after you did all those you should be good.

I got my original part back and it works like a charm. Did not even need to go through the whole process. As I mentioned, it was a bitcoin malware that kept crashing my card. Stupid stupid me. But should help anyone whos having problems like me though.
