Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 STRIX causes my computer to crash.

I have recently realized that I want to finally install a graphics card into my PC, and I went searching and found a STRIX GTX 970 laying around that I had attempted to install into my computer a couple of years ago. However, that installation was pretty unsuccessful. What happened was that once I had installed the card and the drivers, the computer would be able to run completely fine for about half an hour before the computer would suddenly shut off, as if the power was suddenly cut from it. No blue screen, no freezing, just a simple *tink* and the computer was off.

At the time when I had first installed this card, I made several test runs to check what could possibly be the problem. I found that there were no problems with either CPU or memory usage, and the temperature never went into a critical level. Considering that I could not find any solution to the problems, I simply uninstalled the card and left it in storage until now.

My rig is the same as it was back then, and I am unsure of what could be the problem, whether it is a problem with my components, or if something is damaged in the card itself.

My computer has the following:
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional
Motherboard: ASUS Maximus Ranger VII
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz, 4001 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
Power Supply Unit: Seasonic X-650 (650W)

Has anyone else had these problems and actually solved this? Are any of my components incompatible with the card? My PSU is more than what is recommended for a 970 (500W), is there still something wrong with it?

Thanks in advance.

The computer has indeed been able to run just fine without a graphics card, which it has done for about three years now. However, I have a bit of a hard time believing that my card is just straight-up broken, since the card that I had attempted to install before it (a GTX 770) turned out to actually be broken. Here's hoping that I may be able to find some solution to this or else I'll have to either buy a brand new card or see if I can find some sorta' IT help.

That's what I'm going to try and do, I just need to actually get my hands on an 8-pin PCI-e cable, since the STRIX 970 only has one outlet for an 8-pin. I'm going to see if that'll work, and if not, I'll update you on it.
