Trouble:
I'm usually not concerned with modifying a settings file for any game. In the decades I have owned a PC, this is a first for me. No Man's Sky has been crashing a lot for me so I went into its' XML file to see what changes I might make. Dumb-dumb me changed the wrong setting. Instead of setting "VignetteAndScanlines" to "false", I set "NumLowThreads" to it. While trying to load the game the screen went black with a rainbow of artifacts only for the monitor to display "no signal" a moment later. After a hard reboot the NVIDIA driver can't find a compatible device, both in Windows and Linux.

Fixing:
I updated Windows and cleaned the card. After re-installing the drivers more times and ways I care to keep track of, I was left with the option that actually scares me. I flashed the bios, and to my surprise I did NOT brick the thing. The NVIDIA driver in Linux is unchanged. In Windows, the driver actually functions but increasingly displays red artifacts until it gives up and reverts to the basic Microsoft driver. It is what I am using now to post this.

Questions:
  1. What would be a cost effective alternative to this card, on both sides of the aisle?
  2. Is this even fixable? Have I done all I can?

MB: ASUS Maximus VI Hero (8G RAM)
CPU: Intel i7 4770k (Haswell)
GFX: EVGA-SC GTX 770

I have never heard of editing games file resulting in bricking a card. Cost effective replacement in current market would be a gtx 970,980, 980ti or any of the 1xxx series. As for is it fixable, I have never seen an issue like yours that wasn't fixed with a fresh install of windows, but then again weirder things have happened.
