Nvidia GTX 970 in PCI Express 2.0?

I am currently using an ASUS P8P67 PRO (REV 3.0) with an i7-2600k Sandy Bridge, and 16 GBs RAM. I am also using an Nvidia GTX 580 3GB. (All purchased mid-2011.) I was thinking it was time for an update. (EDIT: I have an 850W PSU.)

I don't have a lot of money right now. I was wondering if I could avoid getting a new motherboard for a PCI Express 3.0 slot, and by extension a new processor. Would a GTX 970 work in my current PCI-Ex 2.0 slot? How much of a loss on max performance of the new card could you guess, if it is compatible? Worth it, or wait until I can afford it all at once?

Thanks for any and all advice!

PCIE 2.0 vs 3.0 :D

Yes it will and with virtually no loss in performance.
