Hello... I am unsure on whether to acquire the GTX 970 or 960, I have an Intel Core i7 920 from a while ago paired with 6gb RAM and a GTX 560 Ti. I am a casual gamer and one of the reasons for a video card upgrade is because I am not able to enjoy the eye candy in COD: Advance Warfare.

The way I see it I have two options: I go with the GTX 970 and look to upgrade the rest of the PC in mid term or get the GTX 960 and wait to see how far the system gets me with upcoming games.

The thing with acquiring the 970 is that I do not know for sure if I will be able to upgrade the rest within a year. And with the 960 is that I am not sure if the 2gb video memory will be enough for a good gaming experience.

Will my current system specs bootleg the 970?

Please advise!

Glad your going with a 970, just hope your budget's alright. Other than that, it's going to be worth every penny you spend on it.
Even if you think of going 4k a little later on, you'll just need to add another 970.

Once you get the 970, let us know if all is well and good. Just want to know whats the performance like with a first-gen i7. 😀

EDIT: I even found a link if you want to check the difference between games with the 960 and 970.

the 960 for its price is good but I have seen reviews and alot of people not happy with that card if you have the budget get yourself a 970 that is a WAY BETTER card hence the 120$-150$ higher price

Will my system specs hold on the 970 performance?

you might need to upgrade your cpu or if it is unlocked overclock it to a 3.0Ghz also what is your psu?

PSU: OCZ 600W

600W psu should work.. I think all the gtx 970 needs along with everything else in the pc should be 500w psu

I would say that your PSU is of fine quality.

According to that chart, your i7 almost levels it to a AMD Six core or P.E Eight cores.
Either GPU would be a good choice.
But according to reviews I've read, The 970 is worth every penny you spend while the 960 might lack in power in about 3-4 powers.
With a weak memory bus and less Vram.
The GTX 970 will stand strong for many years to come. It Ultra's almost every game in the market right now.
The rest of the specs seem to be fine. An i7 with hyper-threading activated will be really powerful.

Think about what you play and how often. The 960 is fine for a casual gamer. People on here will always point you at the most expensive part usually. There is no point paying ~$330 for a 970 if you are not fairly hard cor about games. The 960 or even 750ti might be fine depending on what you play.

Yeah, what tical says is also partially right but being able play games at ultra 60fps on the 970 in most game titles is pretty impressive. The GTX 970 is currently the best GPU according to a Performance per Dollar chart.
Buying a GPU mainly depnds upon what your going to play, if your just going to play Advanced Warfare then the GTX 960 surpasses the GTX 760 which is the recommended GPU for the game and would save you some dollars.
If money is not your concern then there is no reason to go with the 970 as you can max out almost any game.

Many thanks for all the replies, it is really helpful to read the opinions of experts. I am inclined towards the GTX 970, I play around 2-3 hrs a week but I like the best experience from the games. So if my current system specs hold I believe I should be ok with the 970 for this year.

Lol if your only playing games 3-4 hours a week you would be OK for this year and most likely 2 years after this one heck since you won't be dogging that card like I would it might very well last you a good 5 years before it takes a dump on you

Even better, now that you mention it I've had the GTX 560 Ti for quite some time now.
