This is all a boon for the PC builders like Alienware, HP etc. Currently an RTX 3080 can be had from scalpers for around $1K or more. I had no choice but to order a prebuilt HP Omen with an i9-10850K, 32GB DDR4, 1TB Nvme, 2TB and RTX 3080 which cost $2200.

I'll just keep holding on to older GPU hardware then. There is no way I'm paying more than the price of a game console for a decent GPU. I've already avoided buying CP2077 because of not being able to acquire a new GPU. I wonder what other games are going to get avoided until hardware becomes available.

The article does make the RTX 3070 look like the least popular option. I'm not surprised given the high cost given the performance and VRAM. The 3080 and 3060 Ti seem to be in more demand.

For the average consumer that is not willing to pay a crazy price or search several times a day hoping to get lucky, they won't notice a difference, out of stock is out of stock.

This almost like watching a comedy ;)
Tragedy comedy... Luckily my pc is not terible old, but those who really need new pc... are getting really in trouble. Who knows if nvidia gt1010 may be the most popular gpu at 2021....

3070 is a fine card. I didn't realize that 2080 ti performance is poor. Let's be serious even at that performance it's geared towards 1440 in which 8gb should not bottleneck. Pricing has already adjusted and is going to go up greater not only from demand but looks like memory costs will be increasing. We are creeping towards msrp $1k for 3080 and $650-700 for 3070. 3070 performance and price seems pretty reasonable to me in comparison, but certainly getting high for a mid grade gpu (this generation is redefining the tiers tho).

3080 is popular cause people think they need that much power or bragging rights and 3060 is popular because people that can't afford the big boys want to get into the action. 60 and 80 series cards are almost always the most popular.

Wild seeing 3090 going to 2k, 3080s hitting 3090 MSRP, and now the 3070s are costing as much as a 3080 MSRP.

It's definitely ridiculous. I had put myself in a que with EVGA shortly after such a bad launch and was lucky to pay MSRP for a gpu when they emailed me in January about my que. I have to say it's really sad still to see such ridiculous pricing, and it get worse for that matter.

Stats in article depict adequate situation in market now. It is like that due to consequences caused by Cyberpunk 2077 release at November 2020 where 3070 was expected best on 1080-1440p screens. And by Covid caused worldwide lockdown when people started to upgrade their home systems and not always wanted (or simply couldn't afford) 3080 and 3090. This together with scalper activity doubled 3070 price overnight and it will remain like that for long time ahead. Agree about 3080 buying out due to bragging rights at first. Same situation with pricing as 3070, but in less crazy degree. 3090 is new 2080 Ti with adequately low demand. Though now it seems that folks with deep pockets, 4K screens and video editing habit besides gaming may skip 3080 and go straight for not scalped 3090 because they cost almost the same then. The rest should wait until prices will drop to more adequate level. When it will happen, nobody knows. Maybe in summer, maybe after next and better GPU generation release. Unfortunately for all of us most retailers became "new scalpers". Folks outside US without possibility to get cards for MSRP prices without obscene shipping and customs expenses are properly screwed.

There is a knock on effect ,that is not mentioned , using my self as an example .
i wish to do a new build ,basically everything new ,case, memory, motherboard. you get the idea ,but in current shortages situation ,I'm not buying ah heck all.
what's the point . i might as well wait till everything is available .and hopefully cheaper (no scalpers) so all the manufacturers are sitting on stock that people like me would have brought
its getting to the point ,where im saying why bother. retail £900 just for decent gpu .decent spec pc running between 2-3 thousand .its getting out of hand. time to sack it .
nvidia 3080's got a lot to answer for. some people are getting disillusioned (myself included)

They are blaming Chineese new year?
Seriously?
That's got to be the biggest amount of time off ever! lol
What is it? Like 3 months of not working or something? lol
American corporate culture would prefer people not take any time off or enjoy holidays. They prefer you be working as much as possible. This is why Nvidia will focus on the holiday first before bringing up any supply chain or logistics issues.

Its not just the new cards, people are pretty desperate to get ANY cards right now. RX 5700's are selling used for around $800, double MSRP, Microcenter near me DID have five RX 6800's in stock, for $1075 apiece... Used RX 5600's are in the $600 area, RX Vega 64's are looking like a "good" deal around the $400 mark, its crazy honestly. We havent even gotten into the "parts only" prices with damaged stuff priced like below, all of this is kind of nuts.

I didn't buy my 3060ti to mine, but man I'm going to have to start doing it when I'm not using it. It'll pay for itself in 2-3 months. I paid $450 for it and the profit calculator for ethereum says it'll make me about $200/mo after $18 for electricity. I'll have a full ethereum crypto coin in about 10 months worth $1700, this is crazy!!!!

I got lucky with Alternate here in Germany, my 5900x came at the end of November and my 6800xt one day before Christmas, they do a great job but I really feel for those who are getting the short end of the stick. It is an awful situation and is really putting desktop interest for the up and coming generation in a bad place. Imagine you are a game publisher with a game that demands high end hardware..... hell I would delay publication until 2022......

I put my RTX 2080 to my workmates boyfriend in a PC I built for him, rather someone who needs and appriciates it has the use than scalp some poor soul for 800$ for a card that SHOULD be a 300$ card, ethics and morality seem to have gone out the window......

But prior to the supply issues, prices were in line after the supply constraints. In fact just judging prebuilt systems, current PC's on Alienware's website have held their prices the same even prior to any discount promotions. So here in the US I haven't seen any upward price swings.

The only thing I have noticed is that if you want a current GPU or CPU it's best to look at the "BIG" PC builders who are getting their allotments from Intel, Nvidia and AMD. Because the only recourse until things drastically change is to buy an assembled PC.

Prices are reaching Japan's MSRP world wide. Sometimes cards are actually cheaper here than back in the states, it's pretty wild. I'm thinking of selling my RTX 3080 because I could use the funds somewhere else, but it would be hard to replace it anytime in the near future.

So the biggest question that this article raises... what availability is "worse" than none?

Is nVidia going to go to peoples' houses, bust down doors, and take back graphics cards that they already own? I suppose at some level they deserve it, since they bought their graphics cards from flippers, but still...

Is nVidia being run by business professionals? Or pro sports ticket scalpers?

The RTX 30XX series cards are in demand because of their performance.
