News Nvidia RTX LHR Unlocker Is Malware: From Hack to Hoax

One would have expected the author of the original story would at least do some due diligence and either wait for someone to validate the "unlocker", or do it on an isolated, disposable testbed, before actually linking to it. Instead, they just helped spread malware. :tearsofjoy:

For a moment, I feel like it was the early 00s again, when early techsites just linked to what they thought was a safe program, only to later find out it was malware-infested. Which then led to tech sites that actually did some prior research on the programs before linking it in recommendations or suggestions.

I trade cryptos on trustable and popular websites but I never get into the scammy websites and giveaways and mining bogus. I've always feared hackers ever since a random guy on discord gave me the address my VPN was rerouted to.

it did nothing as it was STILL profitable to use LHR gpu.
Not nothing, it hindered mining on Ethash by ~25%, it's still profitable because that's not enough and there are other algos. So nVidia just needs to make it more effective and add more algorithms to it. Whether that's possible is another question.

Not possible without new hardware variants since miners can just use older drivers without the additional crippled algorithms indefinitely.

When I first saw this news, I was thinking whether this is a hoax. If this is for real, I believe almost all miners will surely be downloading it immediately to "unlock" their GPU. And this is certainly something that hackers may use to get people to install and run the malicious software. Good that this was tested and proven to be the case. I am no crypto miner, but I dislike dishonest/ malicious intent more.

so, if I understand correctly, you shared a story about a piece of software without testing if : 1-wether it was actually working 2-if it was safe to use. and you even shared a link for everyone to download it? would I dare call that very unprofessional?...

Is it wrong that I feel 0 sympathy for people that fell for this? If it seems too good to be true, it typically is.
Its not about what is good and what is bad. I personally find large scale miners to be parasites. Its about having the professionalism, in such a large and well know tech site, to verify the information shared. But that step was likely skipped for the gain of being the first to bring the news and have lot of people read it. That is exactly how "click bait" sites think...Is it the future for TH?
