I posted this in the Display area, but I think that might've been the wrong area so I am copy/pasting over to here and will have the other deleted.

Okay so this just began happening the other day and I am not sure why. I was just using my PC as normal (browsing the web, playing games etc). Before I proceed I will tell you a few things, not sure if they matter.

GPU: Nvidia 660Ti
Monitor1: HP 2511x
Monitor 2: Old....LCD?
(All of my PC stats are located in my signature, the only difference is I have a 660Ti not the 970/980 or whatever I have listed)

Monitor goes black, but I can still see my cursor. It begins to kind of flicker between I guess "darker" and "brighter" black? If that makes sense, and the cursor gets the hourglass as if something is happening.

PC does NOT restart, however...it brings me back to the home/login screen (the one I see upon turning my PC on), so I put in my password and my desktop loads back up.

Monitor 1 continues to work as normal but monitor 2 doesn't display anything anymore. I check my Nvidia desktop app (GeForce Experience) and there is an update. I update, it tells me to restart PC to apply.

I restart PC and everything is back to normal BUT.....it has happened again (2x so far) and says that I need to update again, latest version being 8/15/2016 which also happens to be the version I updated the last 2 times this occurred. This time however the release date is 8/29/2016. I have tried going back to a previous version and then manually updating the drivers as well instead of using the GeForce Experience, no luck.

I would like to add this find from the dxdiag menu, now I see where the issue is....I think, I just don't understand what exactly is happening.

Under the DISPLAY tab, after my PC does that whole display conundrum....I get the following

Name: Microsoft Basic Display Driver
Manufacturer: n/a
Chip Type: n/a
DAC Type: n/a
Device Type: Display-Only Display Device
Approx Total Memory: 8152 MB
Current Display: 1920x1080 (32bit) (64Hz)
Monitor: HP 2511x LED Backlit LCD Monitor

AFTER updating the GPU again and restarting my PC....things back to normal.

Name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip Type: GeForce GTX 660 Ti
DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC
Device Type: Full Display Device
Approx Total Memory: 10168 MB
Current Display Mode: 1920x1080 (32bit) (60Hz)
Monitor: HP 2511x LED Backlit LCD Monitor

Problem is.....this occurs quite frequently. I have no idea why, never did it before.

Solution
This probably has nothing to do with your problem, but it's worth a shot. Try updating your mobo's BIOS.

Have you tried different cables on that 2nd LCD? (like switched between vga and dvi?)
page 33 and red to see if you installed correct? aslo page 22 and 23 if you used device manager for anything ]

I dont ever recommend auto updating if that's wht you did ?

may go back to a older driver just because its a newer driver don't make it a better driver and black screening is more common then ever these days

then it maybe coming down to that old card showing its age ??

I would try a older driver you knew did not have a issue with and re test

A few people have had issues with recent W10 updates.

0. Unhook second monitor to start with

1. Try to rollback the recent update:
http://www.howtogeek.com/235474/how-to-roll-back-builds-and-uninstall-updates-on-windows-10/

-start
-settings
-update & security
-recovery
-go back to an earlier build

(THE ABOVE may not be available depending on your update status)

2. If still issues, try:
a) DDU-> http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html then
b) reinstall NVidia drivers

3. if working, attach back second monitor

4) If still working, go back into Update & Security, Advanced, then "DEFER" upgrades. Some of the major updates are causing issues.

It's not an issue with the GTX660Ti "showing its age" as its still a well supported card.

(and if it was failing, I'd expect issues visually, but he's apparently just having the NVidia driver disappear)

People have been having problems with Windows 10 and video drivers. Sometimes rolling back a recent W10 upgrade helps. Sometimes cleaning (DDU) and reinstalling helps.

It may be a DIFFERENT solution as well.

I ment it as the card may just be failing due to age not that its unsupported in any way

'' few people have had issues with recent W10 updates.'' not a few a lot

should of asked how long you been running this card on that hp prebuilt or is it just hp monitors ?? if its a hp computer and you jst installed the card on it it could be a slot or bios issue ..

I'm not 100% sure if the 2 things have a correlation together but basically to sum it up....my PC has never "restarted" or whatever you want to call it, out of the blue. Then one day it's almost like my displays ONLY (not the PC itself) restarted, and upon that restart, only 1 was functioning. I just so happen to notice that the display driver needed to be installed....again. Don't think I have noticed it before so I think the 2 issues correlate but I could be wrong.

I do allow the Nvidia GeForce Experience desktop application to update my drivers as needed, never had an issue with it before and been using it for 2+ years. However, I did try rolling the drivers back and reinstalling the newer driver manually, still have the issue. I suppose I could certainly grab an even earlier driver and see if it changes anything and my BIOS just had a new update come out so it couldn't hurt to update that as well.

The PC isn't prebuilt either, I built it myself Jan. 2016, the LED monitor is maybe 3 years old the LCD one that I just have to the side is well around 10 years old. However the monitors I don't believe are the issue, I do think it's something to do with the GPU which I did buy used from a guy about....2-3 years ago as well. Wouldn't have normally purchased a GPU used but....I had an EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
