Performance wise should be identical to 1060 6GB since the card still retain all it's CUDA cores. Though this might be "reject" GP106. But my point is this might a sign gaming volta is near. First 1070Ti now this. Nvidia is unloading all available pascal into the matket. Of course this is pure speculation on my part. After all nvidia is a bit uncontested right now in discrete gpu market. Or they could prepare themselves for the upcoming "intel-AMD" onslaught.

yes it is. but as i said nvidia is unloading all pascal chip that can be sold right now before rolling out volta 😛
pure speculation on my part of course haha.

Well allegedly the next Nvidia generation that is meant for gamers will be "Ampere" from what I have heard and not "Volta". If the rumors I have read are correct we should see new cards in the second quarter of 2018.

Anyways I will wait for the next generation because so far my gtx 970 is still sufficient in most titles and I don't think that it woth it for me buying a "Pascal" chip any more. So if your old card is still sufficient I would definitely wait.

that's the problem. they don't want people to wait and not selling their current GPU that still on shelves.

In a way I can understand why they are going to call "gaming Volta" a different name because one of Volta's main selling points is it's tensor cores for computing and machine learning. Extremely useless for gaming, so my best assumption is that Ampere is just going to be Volta without tensor cores, but just CUDA only.

im getting itchy fingers for a 1080ti but i know i should hold out until spring18 for volta/ampere. i just need to time it right because right now i can still get a pretty penny for my 980ti due to the inflated gpu prices.

I'm the same, GTX 980 Ti still a pretty strong card for even 1440p..

I always enjoy watching Mr Huang, no matter the stage. Out of all CEOs in the industry today, I think he is one of the best. For all the crap I can give to nVidia, having a crappy CEO is not one of them.

In any case, talking about the presentation itself, they're putting a lot of eggs into the autonomous industry. That is good, but I'm scared on the ramifications for their regular GPU offerings. If they become even more compute focused, then that means they won't be improving gaming GPU performance as much... Or at least, that is what I take from this.

For now, both goals are somewhat aligned, but for how long?

Cheers!

nvidia should know their primary source incomes still coming from their gaming business (50%-60% of their total revenue). that is despite them dominating the GPU compute and professional visual solution. the advancement they have in AI right now majority of the fund coming from the gaming revenue. if they only use the funding they got from tesla and quadro to fund their non gaming venture nvidia will not going to have GV100 right now.

intel understand this that's why they try to attack nvidia gaming segment directly by pairing their CPU with AMD GPU in one package. to halt nvidia advancement you need to stop their "cash cow" first which is gaming. honestly i don't think nvidia will sit still on this.

Trend.

The Automotive Automation industry is huge. Like, stupid huge. I would even go as far as saying it dwarfs the consumer gaming industry in terms of potential revenue. They're moving/shifting their R&D to attack that head on and be ahead of the game (and seems to be paying off so far), but I'm doubting they'll keep the same momentum in the gaming arena if their main innovations are focused on AI.

Not saying they are mutually exclusive, but so far, it seems that they'll be doing less and less towards "gaming".

Cheers!

I think is to late for Intel and AMD, They can't stop Nvidia now, i know is already to late.

I have to agree with YoAndy on this one, Nvidia has become an all consuming monster, and Huang is one of those CEO's that is alway pressing to be the best. Look at Titan V. He has decimated the competition, and he loves it! He gave us the 1080Ti just because not caring about Titan owner fallout. This guy is on a mission to be the best, and I don't see that stopping any time soon.

Thanks goldstone77

There is no stopping Nvidia..

The good news for NVIDIA investors is that these markets are still in the early phases of growth, and could give it a massive top-line boost in the long run. Nvidia reported $6.9 billion in total revenue in its recently completed fiscal year.
NVIDIA's big automotive opportunity
NVIDIA's automotive business is still small as it contributes less than 10% to the company's top line, but the opportunities in the segment are tremendous. The chipmaker believes that its serviceable addressable market (SAM) in automotive could be between $6 billion and $10 billion.

I have a feeling that the next gen GPU's may not arrive for quite some time, so I'll just buy the best gear available at the moment. CES 2018 from Nvidia was just mostly AI and Deep Learning.

hard to say actually. i've always heard people talking about how nvidia will use their dominance to "milking" or increase their price but except for the flagship part what nvidia has been doing for years does not change much. nvidia still pretty much coming up with new architecture every two years. i still remember when people said nvidia going to price 980ti in the range of $800-$900 (and Fury X will save us) in the end AMD being hammered when nvidia put 980ti at $650 (even cheaper than 780ti base MSRP which is $700). heard something similar with 1080ti and yet nvidia drop 1080 price by $100 and put 1080ti at $700.

sure nvidia is dominating right now but intel and AMD already teaming up (a combination that many people thought impossible) to directly attack nvidia source of revenue. nvidia will definitely retaliate.
