NVME SSD detection issue on X99

I just bought a Samsung 970 Pro NVME SSD. It appears in device manager and the BIOS, but not disk management. I tried to install the NVME drivers and they all worked, I tried to update the bios, and install new Management Engine drivers. Does anyone know how to get this working? Should I try using a friend's PC to format the drive? My motherboard is an MSI X99S Sli Plus and I have a 5820K CPU.

Reviews of the board have not bothered to test the type of drive accepted in the M.2 slot.The only detail I found on the type of drive supported is in the MSI description itself which says

1 x 2280 Key M(PCIe Gen3 x4/SATA)

Doesn't look good for NVMe drives.

Can't believe MSI would leave out NVMe drives but there she goes.

I've seen other people on forums with NVME drives on this board. Once I get home I'm going to try to tweak some bios settings as explained here - https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=291075.0

Looking in the full specs, it does seem to be able to use an NVMe drive.

but the bios settings seem obscure and complex. I have the x99 asus board with none of this nonsense. The M.2 drive worked from the beginning.

see if there a sub settting under sata devices for the drive or try turning on raid support see if it shows up as a raid drive.
