Hello

Not sure I understand this new tech.
I have tried to read on a website but didn't quite understand the terms Kingston were referring to.

Are these storage options the new SSD?
Are they any "better" for a home PC?
I guess you need a special motherboard?
Do they all come in the small slim style?

NVMe SSDs are the same basic storage technology as SATA SSDs. The interface to the CPU is different. Because of the different interface, the performance limit of SATA is eliminated.
Do NVMe SSDs benchmark higher? Yes. Do they make a HUGE difference to most people? Not really. If you already have SATA SSDs for your OS storage, then NVMe will be about 10% faster for most things.

NVMe SSDs are the same basic storage technology as SATA SSDs. The interface to the CPU is different. Because of the different interface, the performance limit of SATA is eliminated.
Do NVMe SSDs benchmark higher? Yes. Do they make a HUGE difference to most people? Not really. If you already have SATA SSDs for your OS storage, then NVMe will be about 10% faster for most things.
Most newer motherboards (last 5 years) have NVMe slots. So, not a "special" motherboard, just a newer one.
The biggest performance improvement is from spinning disk to SSD. After that it is smaller increments.

NVMe drives are basically a faster SATA SSD.
You need a motherboard that accepts them.
...but I believe you can get a PCIe card that can attach to the MB and also accept them.
I've never messed with the card.
I've two MBs that accept them and I'm running one in one.
The bottom line is....it's faster transferring data.

yes, they offer a faster transfer speed than sata ssd

they are good boot drives for windows, not really necessary for storage yet

Yes but your motherboard supports them now

Thanks all.

I took a look at my motherboard and saw it already supports the M.2 slot.

Have an old spinney hard drive, mainly for storage and an SSD for the OS, games and some other programs, so I guess it wouldn't be worth me looking into NVMe storage yet.
Interesting development for the future though.
 
Only if you want to replace ssd as your motherboard can at least run PCIe 3.0 NVME which run up to 5x faster than a sata ssd.

i have a Gigabyte X570 and main difference is mine can run PCIe4 NVME but the speed difference between 3 & 4 is only really noticeable in benchmarks as 3 is fast enough for most tasks now that the difference isn't massive between 3 & 4. I only have a PCIe 3 NVME myself

Sata = 655 mb/s
pcie3 Nvme mine runs at 3500 mb/s
pcie4 Nvme starts at 5000 mb/s

Guess its something to consider in the future.

i found out recently that its actually better to have any steam games on ssd compared to HDD because of the way steam updates games. It only downloads the changes and its up to CPU & storage drive to make all the changes to the files. and its much faster for an ssd to do its part of the process than a hdd. Often downloads will seem to stop and its because PC is waiting for the hdd to do its thing. It can make fast connections appear slow.

I suspect other places do same things with downloads, a few days ago I moved my downloads folder back onto C (I had originally put it on hdd to keep nvme clean). I had noticed NVIDIA driver installs would also just stop once i had files.
