NZXT Phantom 410 Fan controller smoking!

Hey.
I'm new to pc building. I have all the components correctly installed, except when i turned on the pc, the case fans were not spinning. So, i connected the external molex that came with my PSU to the case molex, and then connected the two fan connectors on the external PSU molex to the fan connector on thr motherboard. When I did this, the fan controller started smoking. What did I do wrong?

You should not have connected both the molex and the motherboard connectors. Only one is needed. You may also have damaged your mobo. Re-read your case instructions for the fans, or contact the case manufacture or fan controller manufacture to find out the correct connections.

Oh, boy. I did what you said, but now nothing is turning on. No CPU fan spinning, no GPU fan spinning, just a green LED on the motherboard. Did I just bust my components?

Possibly.
Read through and complete the steps in the link below to start trouble shooting.
Your PC is now "not posting" so carefully follow the guide. You might end up having to take it to a repair shop
to actually find out what was damaged.

When you reply to this thread again, would you please post all your parts, and the model/model numbers so we (me and other forum members) will have an idea of what might have gone wrong.
I feel for you, brother. I will pray that we figure out a simple, inexpensive solution.
Oh, did you even get to the point of loading an Operating System, or did the smoke escape the wiring before that?

Thanks for the reply. I hope I dont sound like an idiot saying this, but I have not hooked my PC up to a monitor at the moment. I'm still in the process of getting it. I can show you my PC specs:
MOBO: ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0
CPU: AMD FX 6300 Vishera
GPU: HIS RADEON HD 7870 GHZ Edition
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM Bare Drive
Case: NZXT Phantom 410
WIFI: TP-LINK WN881ND (i think)
RAM: G SKILL Ripjaws X 1866 8gb DDR3
PSU: XFX PRO550w
DVD DRIVE: ASUS 16x DVD Drive

Very nice ! If I recall correctly the mobo has some overvoltage protection; I will go out on a limb here and say that you probably didn't damage damage your motherboard.
And the power supply is top of the line manufacture and has voltage and amperage protection circuits within it: The fact that you get the green power light on the mobo is a good sign re. the power supply.
And obviously, from your initial post, the NZXT fan controller may have been damaged or killed: But that is a small thing compared to the rest of the parts.
So, before you start on the check list/trouble shooting post I sent, open your case - maybe even take out the mobo - and take a very close look at the motherboard for any burned or damaged areas, especially around the two fan headers that you hooked up. If you can actually see damage such as discoloration of the PCB, melted anything, burn or scorch marks, then you may have to see about using the warranty for the board. If not, then proceed with that check list.
Do that check list before you reply again. Good chance something in there will help. And remember to find out how to properly connect your case fans etc. before you turn it on again. Good Luck! Let us know about your progress.

I went over the checklist, and everything was fine. I noticed that the fans on the CPU and GPU weren't working when I turned the system on. Would that mean that the motherboard is damaged, or are my components damaged? I sure hope it's just the motherboard.

I found out how to properly connect the fans. I'm currently awaiting a response from NZXT for a possible replacement. I'm also contacting ASUS regarding the warranty and to see if I can replace the motherboard. I think the fan headers were fried, because the CPU fan doesn't work. If the CPU fan doesn't work because of the header issue, could that damage the CPU in any way? Otherwise, I'm going to try turning the computer back on without the bad connection and see if the GPU fan is still spinning. I think the motherboard fan headers were all that were damaged because I see the green LED, and the HDD LED is lit. I'm also going to check for marks/burns on the mobo as soon as I can. Right now I'm just worried about the GPU and CPU, my most expensive parts (of course).

UPDATE: The GPU fan is working, actually. I guess I didn't see it earlier, or some kind of miracle happened. I'm starting to think that the CPU fan just died on me, and thats it. It would be nice if that was all. Any more answers?
