Nzxt s340 Airflow Modification

I just recently purchased an msi r9 390 and it's running a little hotter than I would like it to.

I live in Australia so my ambient temperatures are always going to be fairly high so this will play a part in the temps.

However the card while gaming is sometimes reaching 94 degrees Celsius and thermal throttling. But when I take the side panel off the temp drops almost immediately to around 80 degrees.

I have an nzxt s340 case with all the fan slots filled. 2 front intake and the others exhaust.

I would appreciate any ideas anyone could put forward about increasing airflow and lowering the gpu temps.

Also I would like to add that I have no problems with modifying the side panel if need be.

Hello, I would recommend that you swap to bigger fans if you have not already. For the 2 front intake fans, I would suggest using 2x 140mm to increase intake and I understand that the top fan is a 120mm if you kept that stock so that might need a bigger fan to help exhaust more hot air out.


If upgrading to bigger fans do not work, I would try to see if it is possible for you to angle a fan to blow at the GPU from where the SSD mounting spots are using the extra 120mm fans that you may have around.


Lastly, I would just make sure that all the fans are facing the right direction is all lol. If everything is exhausting air, it could pose a big problem and could explain why your temps drop so much when the side panel is off.

Sadly front fans are already 140 mm noctua reduce fans.

I have tried putting a fan directly under the gpu with no obvious change in temps.

I will definitely double check all my fan directions.

So I guess the only other thing I can do is buy some new exhaust fans. My noctua fans move 65 cfm each if this helps in choosing the new fans.
What would you suggest would be a good choice for the back exhaust mounts?

Also if this helps I have a hyper 212x for the CPU cooler running horizontal in the case. I was wondering if changing this to vertical might suck more air away from the gpu?

If it is mainly your GPU burning up, have you considered maybe using a water cooler for the GPU? I will do some research and see if I can link you again good exhaust fans.

I planned to buy and aio CPU cooler and fit the g10 bracket to the gpu but I have read that it won't fit the msi r9 390.
Ek water blocks are going to release a full cover water block but I'm not willing to build a custom loop costing around 400 AUD to cool this card.

So if anyone knows if there is a way to fit an aio to this card I would greatly appreciate that.

Would it be worth while changing the stock thermal paste on the gpu for aftermarket paste?

Do you happen to know the fan models that you have? I want to know if they are airflow fans or static pressure fans.

You could also watercool your Cpu and fit a top mounted Rad that will also help reduce your internal temp. Also follow where your fans are moving heat to and from eg where cables are running are they obstructing air flow
