I beg to differ that it runs smoothly

x2 4800
twinx 3200 dual channel 2 gig
7800gtx ko

Im playing at 1024x768 with hdl off and anitaliasing off too
Textures are set to big and trees and grass draw distance set to about 3/4 of the way on the slider

My rig runs everything else fine...FEAR COD2 BF2 but this game is making it hiccup alittle bit

What gives?

You people make me sick. Oh, poor me. I have a $3000 cpu and I am worried about being able to play a game with it...boohoo. Did your mother drop you on your skull when you were little? Be happy with what you have and stop showing off.

Not sure what your problem is, but even if you do manage to get it to run, I don't think you're going to get very good performance. Does that setup meet the minimum spec?

What makes you think it's a Windows installation problem? Actually, your graphics card is older and unsupported. I think the oldest the game supports is the GeForce FX series, which was one (or two?) after the GeForce 3. You'll need to update your card to play the game. Oblivion requires a pretty high system specification, although mid-level setups run the game fine with some reduced settings. (Still gorgeous, too.)

Since I have to assume you own the game, check the bottom of the box for the full list of supported graphics cards. The list is very specific: if it isn't named specifically on the list, it isn't supported. Just because your card is a GeForce and there are other GeForce cards on the list does NOT mean all GeForce cards are supported.

Of course, if you DON'T own the game, well ...

Well, I did find out that there appears to be some problems with GeForce 6 and 7 cards, and running in areas with a lot of grass. (and with ATi cards too, for that matter, though it's far less severe)

Performance is highly variable, and it all depends on where you are. Also, remember NOT to judge your framerate while it's loading a new cell, as at that point, even a GeForce FX 5200 is likely going to be bottlenecked a bit by your CPU (even a dual-core) and most importantly, your hard drive. (even perhaps a pair of Raptors)

As I noted on another thread here, it's your graphics card; the GeForce 3 Ti is a few generations too old, and doens't have support for SM 2.0 and DirectX 9.0, (which are effectively the same thing for graphics cards) which is something that Oblivion requires.

You need to either get a new graphics card, or download and use Oldblivion, which was made to allow older, DirectX 8.x cards like your own to run Oblivion.

nice system rodney. but why in the world would you ask a dumb question? can oblivion play on your system? of course. you have a 7800 GTX....

rodney's system:
AMD X2-4400 OC'd to 2.6 Ghz
2 GB RAM
1 WD 74 GB Raptor 10k RPM Drive
XFX 7800 GTX 256 MB OC'd to 490/1.32
SB Live

my 2 year old system:
shuttle xpc SS56L
P4 2.8GHz northwood HT
1 GB DDR400
200 GB maxtor ATA133 drive
sapphire radeon x700 128MB 8x AGP

......... even my 2 year old system can handle obvilion with decent graphics at 800x600 on medium settings. averages 15-45 fps depending on the environment.

Yeah you will be able to run it in all its HDR glory. And don't complain about your rig :p I have a Radeon 9800 Pro. It's a great card for something so old, can run FEAR decently, Far Cry, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, etc. very well. The only point where it struggles is with games written for Shader Model 3.0. I can run Oblivion but with the lowest resolution and about medium quality.

Oh and GET A NEW SOUNDCARD. I recommend it, don't neglect your sound. I just went from an on-board to an X-Fi and the difference was amazing!
