Steve,
>From past observations I believe RGB is a bad place to sell high ticket
items (unless they are rare items) that aren't in "mint" shape. Don't
take any offense, that is just how this place is. If your looking for
"top dollar" you might want to try e-pay or clean it up and wait for
christmas if you can.

Just an observation.

Does "or best offer" include offers below the asking price?

Maybe "OBRO" or best reasonable offer might be a better term......

For a buyer looking for a project machine to make nice, the price is a
bit high. For a buyer looking to pay and play, it is a bit dirty. I
think that if you put in the couple of days to get it into shape, it
will be easier to sell.

I am really pleased with mine after the restoration.

I disagree, Charlie. It's the vocal ones here that would lead us to
think all who read RGP are cheap. There are many others that simply
lurk and don't post that don't mind spending good money for nice
machines.

I have sold 2 high end games for good money and both went to guys that
lurk on RGP. 🙂

This has been discussed before. I always viewed OBO to mean LESS then
asking price but there are equal numbers that feel it means MORE then
asking price.

I guess OFFER is the operative word.

How in the world can you think "or best offer" means "best offer over
selling price"? Thats the stupidest thing I have ever heard!
When you see a car for sale with 2500 or best offer , do you think you
should offer him 3 grand and hope he takes it? If so, Boy do I want to
sell you something!

Now when a seller states "best offer over $*.**" thats what he means, I
will take the best offer OVER the price I stated.

When I see "$xxx or best offer"

I have always considered the $xxx to be the floor and the seller is looking
for an upward bidding war above that amount.

In other words, it means I'll sell it to you for $xxx but if someone comes
along with a higher offer, they get it.

When I see "asking $xxx"

I have always considered that to be a ceiling with whatever downside the
seller will accept. All offers are welcome but can be denied.

Below numbers are for the sake of illustration only.

If it's $2500 obo and I value it at $1500, I'll just keep on walkin'.

If he posts asking $2500, I might offer 1500 if I really want it.

The original poster was attempting to understand why he wan't getting any
offers. My position was that by saying "$xxx obo", for many potential buyers
he was setting a floor. You happen to not be one of those.

Any other questions?

In addition, if a seller states "$xxx obo", by your line of reasoning there
is no purpose of even including "$xxx".

Does that mean that if the only buyer that steps forward offers 1 penny are
they therefore entitled to the item?

What if 1 penny is the best offer?

I have never thought of "obo" meaning a higher offer, although it
certainly doesn't exclude one.

If the seller states "$xxx obo" I take that to mean you can buy it for
$xxx or more right now, or you can offer obo less and wait to see if
somebody else offers more (with the seller arbitrating lesser offers).

>Does that mean that if the only buyer that steps forward offers 1 penny are

Yes, if the seller doesn't agree to a higher offer and is willing to
sell it for a penny. Entitlement doesn't really enter into the picture
since the buyer and seller have to mutually agree to the transaction.

yes that is what I think of when I see best offer......... scenario goes
something like this........... I see something I want, they are asking 2000
I go in and offer 1800 the seller either says yes or no............

That's the way I see it. As a matter of fact, I automatically assume *all*
prices are negotiable unless the seller specifically states "firm" Then
it's a take it or leave it deal.

I'm with Michael on this, to me OBO means I'm fishing for a too-high price
but if I can't find a dufus to pay it I'll accept a reasonable offer.

IMHO, using OBO says, "I know I will never get my asking price. Please,
offer me less than the figure listed here."

Even without OBO, my sales draw offers anyway. "You are asking $100 for
that cell phone, would you take $20?"

I'm not trying to be smart but why not just list your bottom line
dollar? If you don't get it throw it on ebay.
