What we need is a non-invasive bio-computer interface, either a device that can detect brain signals at the head or the neck as they go out to the body. Ultimately, true VR would require a complete sensory control where our brains are being told what they see, smell, hear, touch, taste, etc. but that level of interaction at this point is only science fiction and would require invasive (surgical) methods to make happen. It will be interesting to see where the inustry goes.
Crap input is the main reason that kinect sux ass too. When all you do is wave arms and jump around, its cheesy and just a boring gimmick, there are not enough ways to interact with the game without some kind of buttons in a form that works with the kinect. If kinect was used in conjunction with two separate single-hand held controllers with ample buttons, movement control, with sensors to track controller position, and a proper design to help interact better then kinect could be used with this to allow for some cool and actually useful interactivity with games. The gamepad design using the analog sticks and face button combo,thats been around since the Nintendo 64 just isnt gonna cut it anymore. This same controller design is whats needed with a vr headset. Although not super innovative, the Razer Hydra was a good start but could be improved on.
If someone had a working surgical method for 100% immersion I would sign up in a heartbeat. That being said any other method has major flaws.
A room with 100% tracking ala - something like the Kinect but tons of them. This would allow you to move around and track you full body movement. However, any game I have ever played would get annoying very fast if I have to move around a ton for long periods of time. Good exercise but can you imagine playing an MMORPG and needing to get back to town. Mounting would incur motion sickness and running on foot would literally make you very tired. Sure there would be some good uses of small amounts of gaming. That would be cool, but novel at best.

VR really is the coolest idea of all time and if it could be done I would gladly pay 50k for such a thing. We are long long ways away though. Right now I would love to see the following:
Rift w/option to disable the motion tracking - for watching 2d/3d movies or playing older games not Rift specific.
Two 1080p or better displays that are curved to take full advantage of our range of vision
I understand the market for VR headsets is in the <$500 range, but I would love to see a higher end model (up to $2,000) for people who want to have a mobile cinema as well. Right now Sony is closer with its HMZ-T3, but that still lacks the definition and immersion that a real theater has. Heads mounted displays could be better then IMAX if done right. Since you are the only viewer and they could encompass your entire field of view.
I would like to see these guys approach the exercise industry to have input/output cables that go to the electronic brains of things like stationary bikes and treadmills. For instance, if you were visually going up hill with the Rift, the Rift (or controlling computer) would send a signal to the bike to increase resistance, and a signal would be sent back from the bike indicating the constant changes in speed of the rider. That would at least make exercising much more interesting.
Just bring the damn thing out already! Let the future development come as software updates. Get it to a point that it's good enough for consumer use and let people enjoy the ride as they improve and update/ upgrade. Let the sales revenue drive the R&D and I believe things would mature more quickly.
You're designing it for the consumer, so get a viable product into the consumer's hands and listen to the feedback. At the end of the day, it's still going to be an LCD display strapped to your face, so stop hyping and start delivering. I have the developer's kit, and they need to fix some basic things before I'll buy a retail version.
All that being said, it's a very interesting concept and I believe they should introduce it as a stand-alone base platform and have it be scalable and modular to adapt to the things mentioned above, like exercise. Personally, I want to explore other planets or undersea environments and I intend to use it for my own simulator on OpenSim Platform.
I own two dev kits and love them. Try a horror game in the Oculus Rift and you will be convinced of its staying power. No matter what someone says they always physically react to Dreadhalls when escaping the baddies. So far the best VR control scheme appears to be the STEM packs from Razer. They, along with an updated HD Rift with head tracking, will be good enough for launching VR properly.
Personally I'd like to mix this setup with an external depth camera. You would run long distances with a STEM controller movement stick but when it's not being used it would switch to manual natural body movement via STEM sensors + depth camera and allow you to walk around like real life. The depth camera would then monitor where you are walking and when you get too close to your boundaries (wall, furniture, etc) it would overlay your real boundaries within the game with a wireframe grid and "freeze" the map so you can walk back to the center of your room and continue character movement at the point of the "freeze". This would allow you to realistically travel long distances in VR while still enabling your avatar to have real life body language and short-range movement for the situations that matter (close combat, communication, presentations, etc).
As for adoption I think people often overlook the impact VR will have on non-gaming experienced. Music videos, Movies, VR "web pages", Shopping, Matchmaking, and more will take on a whole new amazing dimension with VR. Below are two links of extremely alpha examples of what to expect.
