Odd PC Troubles

For the last month or so I've been trying to get the machine up and running, with no luck. The problem: It will not install or hold a os, during installation of Win 98, setup will start to conplain about corrupt dll files. Sometimes I get lucky and it won't, or does reboots and manages to squeak by. If it does finish installing it then conplains it's missing versign.dll in the sys dir (ran a search in google on this file and nothing came up) and it will also ask for powpro.dll. it will then say that the registry is corrupt and ask to reboot.

During reboot it goes into scan reg, says it fixed system files and the process repeats. Most of when in windows (when I don't hit "the registry is corupt button" and asked to reboot. ) Exe's will turn up missing then reappear, explorer will and while the registry resets itself each time it reinstall all the drivers again and compains about cab file errors.

This is what I have tried: Scanned for Viruses, formated all drives, cleared the bootsector, purchesed and installed a new hhd as the master and only, reset the cmos, installed Win 2k, 98, 95, SE all with no and similar luck. Stripped and replaced most hw i.e. Video Card, Sound Card, CDRom and all input devices.

I'm at my wits end with this thing and really need to get it fixed, any help at all would be very appreciated. I'm sorry for the poor spelling and grammer.

Thank you

It's a AMD K6- 400, Award Modular 4.51pg bios, 64meg, ATI 128 Rage Pro 64meg, not really sure on the mobo.

I think i know your prob . I had the same one.
1} It is better and faster to install your operating system from your hard drive.Make sure your disk is not scratched or dirty as this will cause you problems as you said!!
2} format your c:\ drive
3} boot from a flopy or cd rom 2 dos and make a dir {win98cd} copy win98 from the cd to c:\win98cd . REMOVE THE CD. Go in your new dir and run setup.
I found this is your safest way to install and the fastest, also when upgrading and you need your cab files there always in c:\win98cd
Hope this works for you. PS if you are overclocked try to install at regular clock speed first. good luck
