Odd temperature observation on CPU while gaming/benchmarking

So my setup here is a ryzen1700x overclocked to 3.8 on all cores, with a Vcore of 1.29.

the CPU has an entire 420 tripple 140mm fan rad, that is 60mm thick... should be plenty right?

I am in a thermaltake view 71 case, and my GPU is on its own loop with a 240 rad in the side position... both radiators are pushing out of the case, no hot air coming in. This observation was done with and without the glass panels.

So when I run AIDA64 with FSB CPU and system cashe all checked... the temps equalize at about 41C... which is just fine HOWEVER.

Gaming on BF1 gets my CPU up to 60c????? How is this possible? I have temperature probes for the water of each loop as well... and the CPU loops water temp is even lower than the GPU loop temp. Not that 60C is anything to go nuts over, but with that much radiator to its self... I should have a toooooon more thermal headroom than this.

Ryzen 1700x overclocked to 3.8 on all cores, with a Vcore of 1.29 is OK if system is stable. You may need up to 1.375V on the Core for 4GHz. Do not exceed 1.4V for longevity.

Ideal temps are 10-15C above ambient room temperature at idle and 60-65C under load.

Your Cooling system is doing its job

Yes but why is the temp 20C higher while gaming compared to a benchmark designed to stress your CPU?

I'm not so much worried about over heating... I want to know why this is happening... ITS a 420 alphacool rad! its 60MM thick! I don't think I should be struggling to stay under 60 in a program that doesn't even load my CPU to 100%.

You have a bought/built a high end system and thrown some considerable money at it and maybe with unrealistic expectation.

You stated quote: "both radiators are pushing out of the case, no hot air coming in."
Even with the best cooling system and case fan config, your temps inside the case will never be lower than ambient.
I have the 1800X and a H115i top mount and max temps are 60-62C with an OC of 4.1GHz and Vcore at 1.375V. I have ambient air pushing thru the radiator which is best for me and I gained about 4C. My room/office however is air conditioned so ambient is always optimal.

Aida64 is a good stress tester and will give a good indication of stability under load.
There are other real world benchmarks that will better test your system. Realbench is what I use and IMO if you can pass the benchmark then you are 24/7 stable and that is what counts.

Not sure if your aware however some apps show a +20C offset on AM4 platform.
Temperature are best gauged using HWinfo64 which show sensor readout on the (Tdie).

I don't know man... just seems strange.

All I meant by radiators pushing out was to say that there is not radiator air coming in, of course the case could never be colder than ambient inside... all these temps are far beyond ambient.

These temps are all post 20C offset. 41C underload is what I get in AIDA after stabilization. Says the same thing in corsair link and HW. Yes I spent some money here... and no 60C is not "bad" but when you have a lightly-moderately overclocked CPU under a 60mm 420, you kinda plan on some pretty sweet thermals. Wouldn't you?

Back when I was air cooling... I don't remember seeing a higher CPU temp than I got with benchmarking while playing games... it was always lower... hence the CPU was not under the same amount of load... so idk its quite un expected.

It is not strange at all, I run several AAA games and found my temps going slightly higher at times than what AIDA64 recorded under load with all cores at 100% .

Even with the best Open Loop design there are many factors that will determine thermal margin.
Type of coolant used, type of fans, CFM pushing air, your CPU, Overclock and Vcore etc,etc

Some CPUs overclock better than others as you undoubtedly know and includes your Bios skills at obtaining your MAX OC with a minimal temperature, takes time and effort to achieve.

You are obviously a keen enthusiast glytch5 with expectations however you will be pressed to find the exact reason for your concern. Enjoy your beautiful build and Good Luck.

Keen means of Strong interest in my book and enthusiast is of admiration and strong feeling. IMHO

Also nice to know you think its all within spec. Apprec. working on doing my old FX build with one of these new bykski waterblocks I picked up at FrozenCPU today... seems to be of nice quality.

Well it's up to you ofc but the FX and AM3+ is an EOL dead concern. lol
I have an FX-9590 build and wouldn't go throwing money at an FX to try and bring temps down.
Besides bykski=Chinese.? not quality assured like EK.

well... most of the stuff we use is made in China... I think you will see more and more bykski stuff in the future. People are catching onto it. the stuff looks great, this is my first part from them though. FrozenCPU bought a huge stock of it.

So I have placed a temperature probe in the middle of my case to measure ambient temps... the ambient temps are about 2C lower than my water temps... which are around 25C... so its not the ambient getting real high and heating things up.

New version of afterburner works with ryzen CPU temp... it bounces around all over the place... but hits the 60s and high 50s quite a bit while the ambient temps remain quite low...

At this rate, if I was still on my air cooler I would be throttling... I don't remember my temps bouncing around 8 to to 10C in a split second like before either. Something strange indeed is going on here.
