ivy bridge core i5's are also doing fine

strange thing in the core i5 roundup, in the app perf section, the core i5 3570k could keep up with the fx 8150 in the second pass of video encoding. although archiving and encrypting scaled with the number of integer units....

overclocking the partially locked i5 are good. downsides - higher vcore on load, higher temperatures. dunno if using lower vcore is possible.

The CM GeminII cheats a little by cooling on the sides as well, but it's an overall good HSF. I had it before the TT Frio and when pushed near the 140W my PhII can produce, it's really not enough. I wasn't able to go past the 3.7Ghz and power saving, whereas the TT Frio is at 3.9 with power savings and 1.45v.

Anyway, thanks for the Microcenter tip, bro. I'll go check that out right away.

Cheers!

i am pleased, i was going for a 3450 but this was looking at me in the store with those "take me home" puppy dog eyes . .

as much as i love the i3-2120 for general purpose and gaming, i got this to edit and encode videos for a web site. i'll admit i am impatient; i'd rather not wait 5-10 minutes to see if i made a mistake in fades and transitions or the audio out of sync if i can cut that down to 3-5 minutes.

i under volted it and doesn't go past 1.0 volts @3.4Ghz while testing in prime95 with the temps just hitting 70c on the stock heatsink; wondering about getting another aftermarket heatsink but i don't think it is an issue ATM.

it screwed up my upgrade strategy of getting a gpu first than cpu, but it opened the door of talking a guy at work into buying my 550ti and i3 to upgrade his kids' box; putting that towards a gpu might end up a better way to go :)

thanks for asking.

what PSU? 😀

Well, I disabled the Virtu software and made a little run in Guild Wars 2 to get some numbers.

With: 100-122 FPS
Without: 108-110 FPS

I ran in the same area, so these numbers should be under the same conditions. I don't know why the Virtu numbers are more spread, but that's what I saw. They were jumping all around, but never fell below 100. The area had lights (sunshafts) and a lot of grass. For those with the game, this is the Charr newb area (Plains of Ashfor), in the camp to the left of the Catacombs instance/waypoint.

I'll see with the GFs PC in a few hours, since we gotta go out in a few minutes.

Heh, this is fun 😛

Cheers!
