I'm using the "offline files" feature on my laptop to
have access to certain network folders while traveling.
Currently I get the error message described below when
synchronizing offline files (This is an XP Pro SP1
installation)
I have replaced actual folder names for simplicity here
with names such as \\server and \share_name. The invalid
file name characters "<D" and "<ND>" are however actually
in the path.
Obviously redirection characters like "<" and ">" are
going to mess up the operating system in interpreting
these files. Thus my problem in accomplishing a
synchronization. And I can't seem to find a why to get
rid of this. The folders, as far as I can determine, do
not exist.
Here are 3 error messages that appear each time I
synchronize.
[1] Offline Files (\\server\share_name 192.168.0.xxx
(server name)): Error accessing '<D' on
\\server\share_name\folder. There are no more files.
[2] Offline Files (\\server\share_name 192.168.0.xxx
(server name)): Error accessing '<ND>' on
\\server\share_name\folder\<D. Files of this type cannot
be made available offline.
[3] Offline Files (\\server\share_name 192.168.0.xxx
(server name)): Error accessing 'Color' on
\\server\share_name\folder\<D\<ND>. Files of this type
cannot be made available offline.
(Note: apparently 'Color' is the file WinXP wants to
synchronize, however, as best as I am able to determain.
It does not exist on the server.)
This happened once before and I was able to correct the
problem by removing the setting to make the parent folder
available offline. However, now that the error has
reappeared (and it's been many months since the last time
this happened) neither the parent folder, nor any of its
sub folders, indicate that they are to be designated as
offline folders/files. They are actually supposed to be
folders that are accessible offline, XP's offline
database is not designating them as such--only these
corrupt location markers.
