Hello.

I would like to use a usb wireless adapter for internet and the ethernet port on my desktop for a offline home network.

My current work around is disabling the ethernet until the Wi-Fi connects then resetting my offline network.

There's got to be an easier way to tell the system the ethernet has no actual internet and is just an offline network.

Using Windows 8.1

Help Please and Thank You in advance.

Nope if you use the DHCP the second router will give your PC a default gateway. You now have 2 default gateways. You can really only have one and the pc will normally prefer the ethernet over the wifi but that does vary a bit from pc to pc. You would have to manipulate the metrics on the interface but it is simpler to just leave the gateway blank so you do not have 2 default routes in the table.
Make sure the ip networks are different and leave the gateway blank on your ethernet. On a desktop that should be all you need to do. Some laptops have garbage in the bios sometime that try to save power by disabling the wifi card if the ethernet is plugged in.

What bill is saying should help. Most home routers use the 192.168.1.0 network if i am not mistaken. So you can configure the ethernet port for something like 192.168.2.1 so it is on a seperate network and leave the default gateway blank or pointing to a router on the offline network (if you have one).

Ok so I've set my offline routers I.P. address to
198.168.2.1 and it now assigns address' in the same range.

Is this what you both mentioned to do. If not I apologize.
