Apologies for the bad heading.

I have windows7 on my HD. Im going to download windows10 onto a new SSD. I want to keep all my files on the HD for obvious reasons but I want rid of the W7 OS to create space. Can you tell me how does one go about this?

Do I connect my SSD up to the mobo and launch W7, go to my desktop and click on the W10 free upgrade pop-up and then select the install destination to the SSD

Do I remove my HD and just have the SSD connected to the mobo and launch my pc, and download W10 via USB or something? Im not sure about this method, this is why I ask.

(Please note) I dont have Windows 10 on disk, but I do have an OEM key.

Cheers. Thank You.

Easiest way would likely be a clean install. Download Windows 10 on to a flash drive, hook up the SSD as the only drive then do a clean install (make sure to select the correct version of Home or Pro). When it asks for your key just put in the Win 7 key you have and it should activate against that. Then after its all done up, connect the HD as a non boot drive, boot in to Windows 10 and delete the OS files and you should be set.

I was told it doesn't work that way. I had to install w7 on my drive, and then upgrade it to w10 later on.

Yeah that was how it started out. The Nov update changed things so you can do a clean install with a Win7 or Win8 key.

Is it possible to do a clean install if I have a Win10 key ? Also im getting a new mobo
