Q87M-E motherboard
Xeon E3 1240 v3 (basically i7 4770 but 100mhz lower turbo)

I already know the computer will not boot an nvme m2 ssd, but I’m wondering if I get an pcie adapter that accepts m+b and connect it with an sata cable if it will behave like a normal sata ssd and allow me to boot off it.

Unfortunately google has failed me in this as most talks go to nvme, or get 2.5in sata. Basically I have a lot of hdd and I would like to slowly transition away from them to the smaller m2 form factor.

Solution
No.
  1. It can't boot from a drive of any type in that PCIe adapter
  2. I've not seen an NVMe -> SATA adapter, especially one that cause that system to boot
  3. Even if it did, you'd get zero benefit of the NVMe

Just get a 2.5" SATA III SSD.
No hassles, it WILL work, and give you the same speed as your theoretical adapter thing.
you won't get any of the extra speed that makes an nvme worth it with a sata adapter. you're much better off with a sata drive that spending on both an adapter and an nvme drive.

considering the age of the system, i'd spend the little bit of money to go for bigger spinning drives. get rid of all those extra drives with one or 2 big spinning disks.

then when you do a full system upgrade you can factor in a nice fast 4.0 nvme drive for your boot drive and all that fun stuff :)

prices will be much better for them and you'll likely be able to get a decent sized one for much less than today. you'll go through a lot of effort and money for literally no gain and have to settle for a smaller drive if you try for those adapters and it won't boot from it either way.

That was the adapter in question.

I know there will be no performance difference if it’s attached by sata compared to a normal sata ssd. I used to have a 2.5in ssd boot drive before it bit the dust and my wife has an nvme, so I’ve seen the differences first hand.

If I’m not capable of booting off that, I may end up holding off on the transition. I tend to use hardware for a long time and I’m not sure if I’m willing to dedicate the space for a 1tb 2.5in ssd in those future builds.

Thanks for the help, I had difficulty finding the answer.
