Hope someone can help me out, i have a HP XW8400 with two Xeon 5160 dual core fitted @3.00ghz so quad core :) i have 12GB of ram @ 667mhz.

My question is would there be any speed and performance increase if i were to buy a motherboard fitted with a i7 2600K and 32GB ram @1600MHZ?

I added up the benchmark for both my CPUS and the i7 and there isnt much in the results so any help would be appreciated :)

the Xeon processor was meant to be used for DATA servers where the I7 was meant for graphics, games and personal computing. so the use of the computer is important.

It sounds like you are implying that Xeons can't do desktop tasks well, which couldn't be father from the truth. They often cost more because they can have multi-CPU support and additional caching, but in general they are the same core types as the desktop chips.

To answer the OP's question, a XEON 5160 is really just a Core2Duo E6850 with a little more cache and MP support. Two of them together give you Four 3Ghz Core 2 Duo cores or a Q9650. A Single i7-3770 Ivy bridge should be roughly twice as fast for most CPU limited tasks.

Thanks guys, I'm using it for graphic design video editing and 3d video rendering in after effects and cinema 4d

Ok so I have gone for the i7 3770K and the corsair 32gb ram a decent hackintosh compatable gigabyte board and a Samsung ssd and a corsair 750w psu, let the building commence :)
