One of my family members recently gave me his pc that he had built about 3 years ago. It has dual Intel Xeon E5620 processors, 12gb of ram and GTX 580 Sli. I'm planning on upgrading the graphics cards to something like a gtx 970. Can these processors keep up with today's top processors?

i dont see why not. maybe the lower clock speeds might hinder it for todays games but it has the cores to play games tho. upgrading the graphics cards is definitely a good place to start. and maybe finding a pair of cpus with faster clock speeds.

if you have socket lga-1366 then you can look around and see which cpu is compatible with your motherboard. i know some xeon cpus are just as fast (if not faster) than the core-i7 and sometimes can be had for cheaper on ebay. like the xeon x5687.
