sounds like a good idea, unless you actually think about it. are these the same countrys that when food gets dropped down that the leaders of the countrys goes around and picks it all up to horde for themselves? and arent these countrys that make children forage and farm for food? or even the onse that put guns into childrens hands? or even the ones that keep girls and women from learning to read to keep them subservient? it seems to me the last thing the world needs is for these people (the ones that would rather do harm than good) to get their hands on these and become computer literate. with the proliferation of child porn in these countrys among other things, i can't see how just dropping these from the sky is a good thing. i can see how these small laptops would become a very powerful tool for small unorganized terrorist groups to become large organized terrorist groups. i do understand how people would say i'm pointing out just the bad and not the good but this issue needs a lot more thought then just to drop them from the sky. most of what i pointed out others pointed out a long while ago, look up a story from http://erratasec.blogspot.com/2008/01/why-olpc-promotes-terrorism.html 3 years ago, and there are others. just seems spooky to me.

Have any of you actually used an OLPC? No terrorist group is going to use these when any modern phone is way more powerfull.

Dropping these into a REMOTE village may be an excellent experiment(come on that's what it is), but It needs to be remote enough that no-one tries to trade/sell the tablet for food/tools (not that they would get much for it).

OLPC is a nice dream, but it is not very realistic...

lets ensure One Meal Per Child first!

Add up the cost of this vast waste of technological cash
How many water desalinisation plants and malaria jabs could it buy?
...
You can't eat a tablet, and when you are dying from disease using the tablet to Google is not going to make you better

This is stupid. I hope this article is a joke. If this is true I cannot beleive that this clown is in charge of OLPC. Several points:
1. Dropping tablets from helicopters will break the device.
2. The hope is that he is planning on doing this in 1st world country villages and not 3rd world country villages
3. If it is the latter then he is extremely stupid as most remote 3rd world villages probably do not have electricity to charge the devices or internet. The best they could do with a tablet is to use it as a mirror. Porn will be out of the question without internet.
4. I see minimum chance of this arse getting his tablets back in 12 months

Disagree. Feeding the hungry masses without teaching them how to function in the modern world economy just means that they will have more children that will rely on handouts making the situation worse. It would be better to drop condoms and birth control (with instruction) from a helicopter. That would help to ensure that their existing food sources are sufficient. The problem is not too little food its too many people.

No, the problem is lack of investment in infrastructure by tin-pot African dictators like Robert Mugabe or Idi Amin. Instead of simply giving them bottled water and food to last till the next drought kills half the population, how about building desalinisation plants, solar farms and roads. They keep their people ignorant and poor so they won't rise up and overthrow them, happy to let them kill each other in tribal disputes or die from Aids because they don't teach basic sex education or from malaria because there is no immunisation program.

Well, you can't take out the tin-pot leaders without having a war so the next best this is:-
A) Drop a cheap tablet on the masses
B) Build a desalinisation plant

It's a no-brainer, Bill Gates made his billions in computers and is now spending paying for malaria jabs and saving lives.

OLPC is a complete waste of time, bring the continent up to the 21st century and let them buy tablets like everyone else.

How about have training programs teaching farmers better agricultural practices, water and resource management, hygiene and trying to integrate this with computers, software and young local people who work to evaluate the needs of the society and implement programs to target these needs, youre right too much work, lets just drop surplus electronics on em', I'm sure theyll appreciate the rare metals in them and melt them down with hydrochloric acid.
