Upgrading the GPU and CPU on my Omen 875 0020

Currently running an Omen with a i5 8400, 32GB ddr4 2666 RAM, and a 1060 6GB. Upgraded the power supply to a corsair 650, upgraded the fans to noctua with higher rpms and upgraded the RAM from 8 to 32 taking it from a previous PC.

The HP website states under processor upgrades a max of a i7 8700 yet other models with the exact same motherboard list way more options.

omen 0020, my build [https://support.hp.com/sg-en/document/c06156249]

omen 875 0027na [https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06355657]

I dont understand how the same exact motherboard can be more limited on one vs the other. Assuming that my motherboard can in fact have any 65w CPU, what would be the best upgrade for the money going from the i5 8400?

Solution
You don't really need to upgrade the CPU, but the video card you can upgrade easily to get a nice boost. Don't worry much about what HP offers for CPUs in the system, that does not mean they won't run only that they don't offer the CPU in the system to buy from them.

if you can find bios update for it. you might able to upgrade.

interesting.... hadn’t thought that the thing that was separating the lists was a bios update. Would make sense as all the CPUs on the lower list after the 8700 are coffee lake R instead of coffee lake S. I’ll look into a bios update

Thanks for that. Honestly I’m probably only going to be doing one for now then the other later down the road so I’ll start with the GPU. Probably going to go with a 2060 as I don’t have near the cooking needs imo for anything bigger
