Question On-board WiFi not working ?

Just built my new rig with a Mag B650 Tomahawk WiFi. Plugged in my usb wifi adapter to stay connected. Screwed in the antennas to the i/o, downloaded the MSI LAN driver from the website. Installed it.

When I take out my usb wifi adapter, the mobo wifi doesn't connect. I can see the RZ616 Wi-Fi 4 in Network Connections, and it will not connect when I select "connect/disconnect". I can use the adapter for now but I'd rather have this piece of hardware function the way it's supposed to. Any ideas? (I checked bios to make sure wifi is enabled)

Edit: I got it to work, but it's incredibly bad. 1/10 the speed of the USB, and highly unstable. I downloaded the chipset drivers from AMD, reinstalled the LAN driver from MSI, and I tried to screw the antennas into the back a little further (the design sucks). Forget it working, any ideas why it's so awfully slow?

Also run "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) and post the results here.

You should be able to copy and paste the results without needing to retype everything.

Do the antennas have an extension cable?

is it set to private network and not public?

try different positions of the antennas

update the BIOS

install latest wifi and chipset drivers
Chipset and wifi was updated yesterday, I'm running the latest BIOS. Antenna position not seeming to help, there's not much space to manipulate them because the i/o design places port holes right under all the USB connections which the bundle of cables blocks them from pointing upward. It's a private network.
Also run "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) and post the results here.

You should be able to copy and paste the results without needing to retype everything.

Do the antennas have an extension cable?
See last post, there's no cable. It's just 2 screw-in antenna as seen here: https://c1.neweggimages.com/ProductImageCompressAll1280/13-144-557-01.jpg

Uninstall the bluetooth antenna and retest. Swap antennas and retest.
Do you mean uninstall the driver or just the physical antennas? I don't know how to uninstall the LAN driver I got off the MSI site. I swapped them and it didn't do anything. Yesterday it was connecting but very slow, after doing all this I can't get them to connect at all. Still having to use the USB.

Just the antennas. BTW the signal from the antennae goes in a radial direction. You want to try to get both the router and client antennas in the same plane for best reception. Sounds like you may need extender cables for you antenna’s. Try testing on the 2.4 band vs the 5 for better range.

As I understand the "ipconfig" results there are two network adapters enabled. There should only be one network adapter enabled. Be it wired or wireless.

And it appears that there are two routers providing DHCP IP addresses to the PC.

The first adapter (wired) is connecting to a DHCP Server at 10.9.11.254 and receiving an IP address of 10.9.11.90 [Was the default Gateway edited out for the private network adapter? Also wondering about that one year lease time - how was the lease time configured - 8,760 hours?]

The second adapter (wireless) is connecting to a DHC Server at 192.168.1.1 and receiving an IP address of 192.168.1.2 Lease time = 24 hours.

What make and model modems, routers, or modem/routers (if combined) are being used?

What cables are connected between them and on which ports?

At the Command Prompt run "pathping 8.8.4.4" and "tracert 8.8.4.4"

The commands may take some time to run. Post the results.

My PC is on the 2nd floor directly above my router downstairs, next to a window on both floors (if that helps at all). It's weird because my Linksys AE2500 is just a usb and doesn't have any kind of connection issue.

I'm not sure about the multiple routers. I have 1 physical router, I think the first one is showing my VPN service. I just ran ipconfig again making sure the VPN is off. I don't know about "lease time" but perhaps that's my VPN service agreement term.

The router is a Verizon router, I googled images and it looks like it's the Verizon Fios Router Actiontec MI424WR. No clue about the modem. Here is what's connected to the router. I think the 1 cable is to a bricked PC.

Ok so there is something weird about this spot in my house. I had my old rig on a metal sheet connected to my desk on the floor (roughly above the router downstairs), the internet never really had a problem. My new rig I have on my actual desk (so I can see it). It's about 3ft above the previous location, and about 1ft away from the footprint. The built in wifi is connecting now but it's not super fast.

My USB wifi came with a usb wire connector that I used for a long time but took it off my new rig just to directly plug in the USB. I said what the hell and connected the wire usb port back in, I dropped the wire down the back of my desk so that it sits on the carpet floor almost right above the router downstairs. Look at this.

That is nutty. I can't believe 1 or 2ft position is causing this much difference. I would move the rig to test the antennas closer to the floor but it's such a hassle trying to jiggle the lancool 2 under there. I think this might just be a weird dead spot location or something on the floor is impeding the antennas' connection.

Can you adjust the antennas in downward direction or to the side?

"USB wifi came with a usb wire connector"
Do you mean it´s connected by cable to the router? or just a usb extension cable?

disconnect the USB wifi while using the integrated one and test again

A metal sheet will certainly affect wireless transmissions. There are many possible variables and having metal "in the way" is not helpful.

However, there is still much more to be considered.

Most home networks can be respresented by the following line diagram where --- > represents an Ethernet cable.

ISP === (Coax, DSL, Fiber) ===> Modem --->[WAN Port] Router [LAN Port(s)] ---> Wired network devices and ~~~~ > Wireless network devices.

Lancool 2 being a wireless connected desktop - correct?

Sometimes the modem and router are combined. As I understand the Verizon Fios Router Actiontec MI424WR is a combination device with coax connectivity.

So the diagram would be:

ISP === (Coax ) ===>[Coax Port]M1424WR [LAN Port(s)] ---> Wired network devices and ~~~ > Wireless network devices.

Feel free to edit and correct my line diagram as necessary. Be sure to list any and all connected devices be they wired (indicate ports) or wireless.

Other things:

The MI424WR appears to be standing on end. Although that can be done it is likely that the cooling airflows are not as they should be and the modem/router could be overheating. Heat is an enemy of electronics. Plus being "on end" puts the antenna in a less favorable position. Next to the metal sheet.....?

The photograph shows a Coax cable and the yellow cable going into a LAN port. If that yellow cable connection is indeed to a bricked PC (old rig?) then disconnect the yellow cable. The LAN port is showing a green LED so something live is connected to the other end of the yellow cable.

New rig being wireless and having only its wireless network adapter enabled.

What is printed along the length of that yellow cable?

Not sure about those paper(?) tabs around the LAN ports - what are those?

In addition (as above) the antenna may not be properly positioned and it is also surrounded wires and objects that are likely causing some interference. If anything, get an antenna extension cable and move the antenna up and about to determine if wireless transmission and reception can be improved by doing so.

Edit my line diagram to show the full network: all devices and connections.

Hopefully there is just some simple error of omission or commission that needs to be corrected.

Being able to see and hopefully understand the big picture is key.
