I came home from school today to see that my audio stopped working. I would plug in the headset and windows will detect it (the green bar goes up when playing music) but nothing would come out. Windows also sometimes detects it as a microphone instead. This happens with all my onboard jacks and the front jacks. Ive tried reinstalling graphics drivers and my realtek drivers but no avail. Ive a
So tried unplugging and plugging my gpu and front audio cable.

Any help would be appreciated.

Specs:
Motherboard- asus m5a99fx pro
Gpu- rx 480 crossfire
Cpu-amd fx 8320

If it turns out there is no way to fix my audio, would it be better to replace the mothebroard or buy a sound card?

Solution
Sadly none of these solutions worked. I think the audio on my motherboard is broken. I ended up buying a cheap sound card(Xonar DGX) and my problems have been resolved.
I doubt you need to buy anything.

Check device manager to verify that nothing really needs updating or installing. If it does, and Windows can't find it then go to the manufacturer site and get it directly.

Check you sound devices to see if it's properly set to default. Recent Windows updates have done some wonky things to settings for some people. It possible that's why its seeing it as a microphone but you there might be another listing for it as a headset that needs to be set as default. Also double check that the sampling settings are right and working.

If you have any software managing your sound make sure they're all using the right device. If even one has the wrong listing it can break the chain.

Thank you for your input. I feel it had something to do with Windows but now I am not sure. I have reset my pc(nothing valueable on it) but the problem still persists. I have also set Speakers(the main audio output device) as default and it's still happening.

EDIT:
In device manager, System Devices, one of the High Definition Audio Controllers has a yellow triangle warning logo. It won't let me update it.

Here's the link from Asus for your audio drivers: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/M5A99FX_PRO_R20/HelpDesk_Download/

If they're newer than the ones you installed I'd recommend trying them. I saw on Guru3d a month ago that Realtek put out some new drivers also. You may need to get them from there instead.

Something that might work. Uninstall the Audio Controller and then reinstall it. Sometimes it will grab the driver then. If you have an install disk you can try to point update/driver install to the correct folder and it might install then. This could be an issue with the latest Windows updates also. I have on numerous occasions seen old drivers kicked out and then blocked. If that's the case then going directly to Realtek would be best.

Ive done all these steps and its still not working

Here's a variation of what I was saying. I found it on MS website but problem seems identical:

"So I uninstalled 'High Definition Audio Controller'.
However this time, instead of just restarting and letting it install it itself, I clicked 'Scan for hardware changes' (under Action). It found a new device called PCI something under other devices.

Then I open up Windows Update and clicked check for new updates (it also scans for drivers) and I think it just reinstalled 'High Definition Audio controller' automatically and then there was no yellow warning sign problem thing.

If that doesn't work, just play around in device manager with scanning for hardware changes and updating bollocks.

If you are still stuck, try 'Add legacy harware' (this will install an OLD device), click advanced, click 'Sound and video game devices', wait a while, find an appropriate device and continue with the process..."

Solution
Well, I'm glad you found a solution. I still believe it likely that a update probably broke the driver chain. Be aware that can happen to sound cards as well.

Bottom line is your up and running again, way to go.
