This is how the pro tools handle this problem:

Note that even though the "slow responding" fix was applied, head #3 was too far gone to read anything. The operator then switched off this head and cloned all the others. He then replaced the headstack and cloned head #3 on its own. Obviously, this is not a DIY proposition.
