Hello,

I just bought one more 3TB WD hard drive

Model : WD30EZRX

What i want to know is , i should create one partition of 3TB on it or should i make multiple partitions like one of 2TB and other one with the rest of the space. which one will give me better performance and long life of the hard drive ?

Thank You.

Solution
The 1st partition always has the best performance since it rests near the outer tracks of the drive. You should partition based on need, not necessarily performance. Also, smaller partitions are quicker to back up.

If it's your only hdd, then always make multiple partitions:
1. for OS/programs - cca 100-120 GB is more than enough /or 250-300 if you play games/
2. for documents, music, movies, backup files /e.q. - stuff you'll need in case you want to reinstall your pc/, and a ghost image of the system drive after clean OS install /complete with drivers, all of your programs and all performance tweaks/... /note: I keep my games here as I like to keep my savefiles in case of emergency 😀/

This way, if there is something wrong and you have problems with your system /aka virus or anything/ you can safely format the system drive AND KEEP ALL YOUR PERSONAL DATA.
Also - ghosting back your system back takes about a coffee break, reinstall from scratch and setting things straight takes half an day :)

If it's your second drive - let it be. One partition has it's advantages.

I think you guys missed this part 😛
that means its not my only HDD......but it was my mistake i should have been posted the other details, so here are my other HDD details.
1x240 GB SSD
1x120 GB SSD
2x3TB HDD(WD30EZRX)

Now after these HDD's i have bought one more 3 TB(WD30EZRX)

Can you please elaborate this part about the advantages of single partition ?

Guys i want to make 2 partitions out of this Drive , in given below layout.

Partition 1 (2TB) : for software(installers),learning stuff(photography videos, programming videos) and every other kind of things we store in out PC's like Game Installers , wallpapers, etc.

Partition 2 (Rest of the space from 3TB after that 2TB partition) : this will be used only for Music mostly mp3 and music videos.
Please also tell me that which way the hard drive will last longer.

WHY in world do u need a 100-120 GB just for OS & programs ?!!

"note: I keep my games here as I like to keep my save files in case of emergency"

You got that straight, so why would you install games on OS drive ?

For ghost image i prefer and external HDD because you never know what could happen to your main HDD (but make sure you backup your OS right after you've installed programs and ran full system scan with your anti-virus).

I prefer the way you just planned right there.... amitkool21

SSD's are meant for OS's and Programs so we can get better peroformace.

i never said that i'm going to install games on my OS Drive ?

were did the ghost images came from, i never talked or asked about them 😛

i have 5 external HDD's and trust me mate their lifes are way shorted than the Internal ones .

man your reply had so many mixed up things 😛

hahahaha....
I was replying to random stalker but yours got in the way man, I have 1 External that i bought 2 years ago and still works beautifully, i don't know why yours didn't last !!
I wasn't referring to SSDs when i talked about 100-120GB, i was talking about HDD partition; That's why i asked about installing games on OS drive.
Sorry for the mix up, my friend
