Hi Guys,

So I just installed a new CAT6 cable from my BT HomeHub 5 into my PC. I'm running am Asrock 990FX Extreme 3 MoBo with Broadcom NetLink Gigabit drivers. I have no idea why i'm getting such restricted transfer rate; please help!

Many thanks,

Callum

I'm not familiar with the BT HomeHub 5, but most routers / gateway devices have a port setting to toggle between 100 MB and GBE. Have a look at the config and ensure the ports are set to function at GBE. Check the settings on your motherboard's NIC as well and ensure it's either set to auto or 1000 Full.

I get about 5 up and 30 down, no where near my infinity advertised speeds

I can't find any setting in the Hub manager to set the port speeds and I don't know where to find me nic settings to change them :/

When you go to your Control Panel, launch Network and Sharing Center, click Change Adapter Settings and locate your NIC. First, double click it and you'll see it's connection properties. You'll see the speed and it should say 1.0 Gbps.

If it's not, then exit out of the connection properties. Right click the NIC, select Properties and at the top, click Configure. Open the Advanced tab and in the Property list, look for Speed & Duplex, and when you highlight it, you'll get a drop down on the right where you can set the value to either Auto Negotiate, 100 / 1000 full or half etc.

Hi

It does not matter if the network icon on system tray says 100 or 1000 unless download speeds are close to 100

Using cat 5E or cat 6 cable is not going to make any difference to network speed between PC and router switch

30 MB/s seems quite good for UK broadband
I have to make do with 7 MB/s over copper or 4G on my tablet

Use BT speed test as that should give you the highest speeds

Mike does make an excellent point in that 100 MB or GBE is not going to change your internet speed one bit. But since you inquired about whether you're running at GBE or not, it's worth looking into anyway. At the very least, it will ensure that any other devices connected to your gateway, whether now or in the future, are transferring at full speed between them.

Okay, so when I get to Speed & Duplex the only Values in the drop-down box are Auto, 10 Mb Full, 10 Mb Half, 100 Mb Full and 100 Mb Half :/

In this case then, it should be set to Auto, and if it's connected to a GBE hub, it should show it connected at 1.0 Gbps in the connection properties.

right, so i've done some research and my specific driver doesn't display 1000 mbps in the speed settings, it will always connect to this speed by default if it is present.
I tested out my homehub with a separate cable into my laptop and, sure enough, I got a solid 1 Gbps. I then swapped cables for the one i've been using in my PC; only 100 mbps. This has lead me to think something's wrong with the cat6 cable. Possibly a crimping issue? I did crimp it myself.

Could very well be that something has been cross connected or in incorrect sequence. Which crimping instructions did you use?

Okay, so I took off the RJ45 crimps and swapped them for an Ethernet wall socket, I then ran a store-bought cable from the socket to the pc and I have glorious Gigabit LAN. I will now be transferring/streaming to/from my htpc and NAS lovely and quickly. thank you all very much for your help.
