Hello all

Every 4-5 years i get to update my computer, this week is going to be big, as i'm coming from a old pesky i7 950 who doesn't let me overclock him...to something big, wich i will use till around 2019.
I know that i7 6700k is fresh and next year there will be a better skylake, and knowing i7 4790k is a monster cpu on the end of the line, i just can't figure...Btw I got a RM850w, 2xGTX 960s and 1 H100i GTX ready for me to build, hopefully tomorrow.

I'm really on the edge here...

This:
-Asus Maximus VII Gene Intel Z97 SK1150
-Intel Core I7-4790K 4.0GHz (4.4GHz Turbo) 8MB BOX
-Corsair Vengeance Red 2x4096MB (8GB) DDR3 1600Mhz CAS9 1.5V [x2, 16GB RAM]

OR

This:
-Asus Maximus VIII Gene
-Intel Core I7-6700K
-G.SKILL KIT 8GB 2X4GB DDR4 3200MHz CL16 Ripjaws V Black

Where should i drop the bomb?
I really dig the i7 4790k though...

Between those two get the i7-4790k build.

- If you're buying the rig for 5 years you'll be upgrading again at the end of the 1151 socket anyway so the possibilty of a Skylake rig being more future proof is dimished.

- The first build has a full-sized ATX motherboard that will allow for a much wider possibility of on-board upgrades and drive expansion. It won't have features like USB 3.1 that the VIII Gene has, however.

Honestly either will be a strong build. It really comes down to whether the features you get from Skylake like cooler/ more efficient CPU and RAM & USB 3.1 outweigh the benefits of a full ATX board. Only you know how many drives you'll want to connect, or how many extra PCIe cards you might want to add later.

Ya, tough call, both chips pound your i7 950 but then they are too close to call.

I've got the i7 4790K and can see no particular upgrade for myself without cutting off
an arm or leg. The whole ecosystem is very mature and gives you lots of options. Your
next step after this will be GPU based most likely anyway when the 960's give out
