Open air GPU airflow question

I've been told that adding a side fan will help with GPU temperatures...

So my question is would a side fan make sense with an open air (aftermarket) gpu? or would that just mess up airflow?

Alternatively...would a side fan be more beneficial to a blower style gpu?

Any ideas?

Solution
It may help lower the temps a couple of degrees.
If you already have a front intake fan blowing air across the card then it isn't all that necessary.
The one time when a side fan would be helpful is when you are running crossfire/sli.
