Opening up a Seagate Momentus SATA.

I have Seagate momentus external USB hard disk (sata) which isn't working. I suspect the motor is jammed and needs placing in the resting position. So I've removed the plastic casing and have removed all of the screws on the top of the drive (the metal sheet side) but I can remove it. It's stuck at one end, something is still attaching it. I know on some hard disks there is an extra screw under the label but I have removed and there isn't. I've ended up trying to pries it open but then thought better off it as I don't want to damage it if there is a proper way of doing this. Other SATA drives I have opened up just unscrew, I've not seen this before. Any pointers would be most appreciated.

Too late to ask for advice - the killed it the moment you broke the seal at one end to open the case. Throw it away and start again.

What? I don't believe that for a minute. Can you explain yourself or are you just wasting time?

I fully explained myself already - the drive is toast.

They're manufactured in what they call a clean room by people who wear plastic headgear and snoods over their whiskers. Air purifiers and dust extractors are on all the time bcause the slightest invisible speck of dust would wreck the chances of it working properly in data storage.

If, as you suspect, the data reading head had become stuck, just trying to remove it would scratch the delicate disk, if it hasn't done so already.

But I've done this with at least 5 sata's over the years and they've all returned to boot just fine, so I can't agree with you there. Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear in my question. I don't need to who if you think it's possible to fix. I want to know if anyone has experience of opening up a HDD of this particular model, and how the case is released.

If you get to the point where you can see the round platters, you have almost certainly stuffed it. Maybe if you had exceptionally well filtered air and didn't touch the heads, it would work for a while - they do have a little filter. But I find it hard to believe five.
