Hi guys,

i currently am thinking of moving from AMD to intel. the reason being that my gpu is a GTX 970 (still in shipping). my idea is only to game on this no video rendering no high editing stuff, just pure gaming.

my current build is:

A 10 5790k
Asus a88x - PRO
8 gb or AMD R9 seris 2400 mhz ram
1Tb seagate HDD
Crosair CX500 PSU

planning to change mobo and processor it to :

Intel i5 4690K
ASUS maximus VII Ranger
ASUS STRIX GTX 970

Please let me know if this is a wise thing to do. i am too confused ! 🙁

Ceasar,

The video card upgrade is a great idea, even your current power supply should have no trouble running the Strix 970, as it's one of the most energy conservative of the bunch. Here's another forum reference that confirms this.

The processor upgrade is also superb. As anti-duck mentioned, your current cpu will likely bottleneck that epic GPU. The 4690k is the perfect new option.

Your motherboard, however, seems like way overkill. Are there any features on the one you picked out that you don't find on this dramatically cheaper board...
no video rendering means you only need an I5 4690k
4690k means overclocking so you're going to need an aftermarket cooler - one of the best bang to buck right now is the rajintek themis
if you're getting a ranger mobo, then you can downgrade that to a msi z97 g55 SLI / msi Krait edition / gigabyte z97 SLI / asrock extreme 3 and still have it do the same thing - they will all be ready for SLI
for SLI you're going to need a stronger power supply - rosewill capstone 750W, EVGA G2 Supernova 750W, 850W, or any XFX gold rated 750W power supply unit would also be recommended.
the I5 4690k will not bottleneck 2 970s.
happy building

It's still a Z97, allowing you to overclock your CPU. Supports all the necessary Sata 3.0 and PCI-E 3.0 connections, and has a second PCI-E 3.0 slot that will allow you to SLI a second 970 down the road if you choose.

Lol I wouldn't risk a brand new Asus Strix GTX 970 with a CX500 that might be efficient but not last for long with the risk of harm to other components. I would not use a Corsair CX with any valuable graphics card.
