I have been building computers since the 80286 days but my last build was a Core 2 duo and it is by far the WORST piece of crap I have ever built. The motherboard was total garbage and I will relish the day I get to smash it. Below is what I am thinking of building. I do CAD/CAM and build a computer then replace it when it no longer suits my needs. I am getting tired of boot times what do you think of the SSD HDD combo drives? I'd like to add another monitor at some time, Please give me your opinions and correct any mistakes I am making.. Thanks .. K

I have used and SSHD before and it depends on expectations but i was dissapointed in the performance. True SSD and perhaps a secondary HDD works better for me.
As for your build. If you plan to game then you have way too powerful CPU and too weak GPU. Get an i5 and invest everything you save into the GPU. If you dont need any gaming or 3D rendering done then just use the integrated graphics.

Edit: Didnt see the need for CAD/CAM. Dont know that much about the rquirements for those but the integrated graphics on the I7 is still better than the R5 230.

Your build is inefficient. You will end up having a rig with too many unnecessary components just to waste your budget, while its processing power is inadequate. Here is my suggestion :

Assuming you don't need monitor, the BD-R burner is unnecessary and the Kingston SSD is based on a very outdated controller. I would do something like this:

Thanks for all of your help the blue ray burner was something that was thrown in when you bought a i7 processor and motherboard. Thank you all for your input. I had no idea I could get a SSd for $100. I need to add O/S into the cost also. keep em coming.

i7 is overkill for a CAD build. I have seen Dell Precision CAD Workstation that uses an i5 4590 as its CPU. You can get a 128gb Crucial SSD for under $100, and Crucial is a very good brand. The OS I choose for you is Windows 8.1 64-bit.

You do not need an optical drive for this build. It's the cloud-computing era now. Everything can be downloaded, streamed or torrented from the Internet. If you want an optical drive, buy an EXTERNAL one. Installing an internal optical drive significantly decreases your ability to route and manage your cables.

Here are the updated specs :

Thanks mate, upgraded to Windows 8.1 already. The reason is that I'm still having prejudice that Windows 7 is a more stable and less proned to compatibility error than Windows 8.1.

what CAD program will you be using? knowing your uses will help us know what brand gpu to go with. gpu acceleration varies quite greatly across different programs.

the 4790k out the box is running at 4.0ghz with 4.4ghz turbo. vn_mnm might be correct as the i5 could be enough as certain programs wont take advantage of the hyperthreads the i7 has. but the basic i5's are still running at a much lower clock speed... 4590 at 3.3ghz plus 3.7ghz turbo. its quite a big single core performance difference between the two.

Why do you use a gtx 960 at 2gb, 128-bit bandwidth bus while your mobo does not support either Crossfire or SLI ? It's not flexible and versatile. I think my suggested rig has an edge over yours in these 4 aspects : gpu, mobo, hdd, psu.

:)

well of course a firepro gpu will have an advantage, but at more cost. wd blacks are no more reliable or fast than blues, this is well documented now, only warranty is longer. if you want a reliable hard drive, get a hitachi/hgst. without knowing which cad program, its a shot in the dark which gpu is needed. the w5100 is using a 128bit bus anyways.... its just a 260x/7790 with driver support and a ton of vram.

idk why you would spend $100 or some corsair rm series when you can get an much better xfx gold unit for cheaper, let alone a seasonic.

The Corsair RM550 is fully modular, and I read somewhere, it is a Tier-2a psu which lies right in the sweet spot for the price and efficiency.

Thank you all again for your input. I will be using Matercam X8 and Solidworks. I was picking Windows 7 for compatibility reasons and because of the bad press of windows 8. The crossfire and SLI stuff is all the kind of stuff I need help with and just the kind of mistake I am worried about making. Also using the optical drive as an external is a very simple solution that I just didn't think of. It's just been so long since I've had my head into this I'm afraid technology has passed me by. I was just picking the i7 to delay upgrading later but don't want to have a flamethrower of a CPU and bottleneck it further down the pipe. I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thank you all again for taking your time to help me out.

Actually that doesn't matter anymore - after the Windows 10 switch we'll all be running on the same operating system.

I would still go with an i7 and 16GB of RAM for CAD and CAM programs. That's just my two cents.

How well do the adapters work going from DisplayPort 1.2a to DVI ? My monitor is DVI. Also I noticed that several of the builds in the parts picker do no list a cpu cooler .. I'm assuming that one comes with the CPU that will fit my needs ?

_CPU cooler : If you follow my recommendation, then the Intel stock cooler is fine, since the i5 4590 is not overclock-able.
_GPU : The AMD FirePro W5100 does not support DVI interface, so you have to buy a 3rd-party DP to DVI adapter for that. The quality of the adapter is exogenous, since it has nothing to do and is not included with the GPU.

Well I have been busy and my new computer was put on the back burner. Now that time has past I'm sure you have better ideas now and the prices have dropped. I have plenty of extra drives so the build will only need a SSD boot drive. If anyone would like to help me pick again I would appreciate it. I would also like the computer to be able to hold 3-4 had drives.
On another side not would my 3TB Green drive slow the system down ? I would be using it for storage .. Thanks K

No go with the R9-285, though the new R9-390 is a rebranded version of the R9-285. You don't want workstation hardware if you plan to play games.

Well I finally got around to building my $1100 system . Has anyone else had trouble ordering from Newegg? They send a few mini .99 cent charges trough and then the big order. That flagged my fraud prevention. I've been going back an forth .. the chat lady and Newegg was not very helpful. Someone had suggested that Newegg is trying to steer people to their card like Amazon ? Dealing with Newegg has really made this a pin.

BTW .. this is what I finally decided to build

That is strange. I've never heard of that happening before. Was it shipping? Tax? Something else? I would be curious to know about this because I buy stuff from Newegg all the time and have never heard of this happening.
