This CPU wouldn't be bad for Consoles but power consumption is huge therefore it is good for nothing. AMD should drop BD and add two cores to Phenom II and name it Phenom II X8 and call it good.

Did AMD over-hype? Did they release the 8150 in a collector's tin? Hmmm....

When August hit, I was tired of waiting for BD. I had really high hopes as I always like to root for the underdog. The sense in me said finally, sandy-bridge blows away what you've been running since 2007 so just go for it. No regrets other than waiting that long before deciding on sandy bridge.

Why didn't AMD hire a bunch of fanboys to camp outside Microsoft's offices, until they were let in and figured out a Win7 update or at least in some way figured out to squeeze more out of the package?

Maybe AMD should have opened its doors much sooner and nurtured a collaborative relationship with other companies in the business. All is not lost, but it may take time to lose the after-taste of this bitter-sweet release.

[citation][nom]captaincharisma[/nom]you must be rough with your gear man cause i have a 5+ year old samsung LCD monitor still running strong with no issues or dead pixels HP is nothing but cheap crap and is cheaper low wuality crap than samsung and thats says somtething FAIL at spreading the hate[/citation]

He's spamming every news article with that same post.

If *we* expected them to be able to complete with Intel, then yes, *we* did expect too much.

I'm not really blaming AMD, they simply don't have the capital to complete with Intel at this time, and playing catch-up in the processor industry isn't really much of an option.

AMD may just well be predicting all the single threaded tasks will be done on our tablets and smartphones and already beginning on televisions. The more basic stuff I can do somewhere else without having to power on the computer, the better, I guess. I don't want to browse the web on a 4-core w/ HT or a 4 module BD part. I'll save electricity until I need to get some real work or serious gaming in.

I don't own one of these or the APUs, but I love the Fusion chips and can't wait to see more muscle in those while still keeping power in control.

This might be something similar to what happened with the Phenom I series. They were kinda´crap...not utter crap...but crap, then the Phenom II series were what Phenom I should´ve been originally.

Maybe in the "FXII" series is where we´re actually gonna see (hopefully soon enough) the architecture/IPC/power-consumption optimized.

Me, I wasn't disappointed. Would I have liked to see AMD bring out a Sandy Bridge killer? Yes. But I didn't expect it. And benchmarks show it performing in gaming between an i5-2500k and an i7-2600k, as well as performing as an excellent server processor. Which to me is a win for AMD as they can at least compete with Intel on mainstream performance. Was there an over-hype for it? Yes. But that is more the fault of all of us fanboys who touted how great it was going to be.

But, in the end AMD came out with an acceptable part that will be much better once we have the option of dual-booting Unbuntu with a Bulldozer patch or Windows 8 comes around. Until then... Crysis 2 will be awesome and my rig will be Crysis 3 ready.

they are not going too far, but going the wrong way, the marketing manager had to be fired !!
they went too early to the octacores phenomenal, they should just count the BD module as 1 core with 2 threads, name the FX-8150 as FX-4150(Quad Core 8 Threads CPU), compete it to the i5, they will gain more positive view from that, ppl will start to think that AMD latest Quad Core 8 Threads CPU was able to compete with intel i5 toe to toe, and they can still have enough time to refining and polish up their fresh new architecture, release another 6 cores 12 threads CPU when their technology allow them to do so, then compete it to intel i7 and their older Phenom II X6, the result will be much more better......

Well, we all remember what happened with Barcelona (Phenom I) and then how they totally fixed it with a die shrink and a few tweaks (Phenom II) in rather short order. I only hope that AMD can do the same thing with PileDriver because honestly, what I've seen is so bad that I'm going to stick with my Phenom II X4 940 for now. 🙁

While I do believe that AMD's marketing strategy was poor, I feel that the chip itself is simply not competitive. When the different between an i7 2600K system and an FX 8150 system is around $60, the Intel solution is the logical choice. When for less money an i5 2500K system can be built, it really makes the FX look uncompetitive. I have little incentive to upgrade from my overclocked X4 955 to an FX series processor. Since I would have to get a new motherboard, Intel suddenly looks very attractive to someone who has been an AMD fan since the late 90's.

No i dont accept this, there is something wrong with this. And no im not an AMD fanboy....2 bil transistors, a new architecture, higher clock speed, more efficient boost etc. Something must be capping the real potential of the chip. Maybe it is about inefficient memory management or something about hypertransport or maybe software side but dont tell me this concept is bad. Actually i like this new architecture, this has good potential. In some hardware sites they even claim that this can be because of inefficient thread management of win7 and they claim that BD will see a huge performance jump with win 8. I dont know but i really think that theres a fault in somewhere; something doesnt work as intended. AMD must check BD in detail...

[citation][nom]erniepie[/nom]http://www.rage3d.com/reviews/cpu/ [...] ex.php?p=7This is a good read8150 VS 2600K (OC)[/citation]
Very interesting read. Rather different conclusion (though all processors are over-clocked) than Tom's.

Again, I'll repeat. I think many were expecting too much - the clean kill as the above article puts it. I'll also reiterate my opinion that if the 8150 were a clean kill of Intel, the cpu would be prices much higher.

During the old days I bought many BEST CPU's
- they were mostly very innovative AMD products
Opteron line with NB and 64bit extensions was the golden age of AMD

I remember Intel extending and splitting the pipeline up to 31 stages
I didn't work - it was dog droppings.
P5 was cancelled for a very very very good reason
Then somehow AMD lost the game

The Intel Mobile CPU renamed to Core was not very good
but Core2 hit the jackpot!
Now the long delay has caused this new CPU to arrive as old.
Too little too late and with power leakage? What in the world?
I also expected BD to replace PhenomII X6, but now I feel cheated
Marketing hype - for sure!
A CPU "model" with double integer cores sounds great
but then AMD also counts these "half-cores" (80% cores?) as one core
but they can't deliver single job performance
and the multicore only works when fully loaded
AND then it uses nuclear power plants like Fermi I
An affordable server CPU marketed as a desktop CPU??
So while the SOI scaling problems delayed this an acceptable Opteron III (?)
and the power usage doesn't even maked very good server CPU
I say: fanboyz, take your dozage of Bulls***Dozer
then late eat a Pile of S*** driver using Windows 8
and finally Roll in a Steaming S***
AMD has lost the game forever

I blame the SOI process delays & marketing lies & dropping the ball

@CyberAngel

I agree you make valid points about AMDs marketing practices; however, while AMD may be dead forever to you, I certainly hope they are not. As I stated in an earlier post, without AMD in the market, Intel will surely raise the price of their CPUs far, far beyond what they are now. History has proven that that is what happens when a monopoly takes root.

Regardless of the trash talk you spout, I will retain hope that the new leadership at AMD will get the ship back on course. In the meantime, I am sure you will find a cozy home with Intel until they raise the rent beyond the price that you can afford or are willing to pay. Cheers to you. Enjoy it while it lasts. :)

This really depends on what your PC's main purpose and the users behind it. I built a workstation PC for the office so it could double as a multimedia machine at work. Looks like an AM3+ build will wait until the architecture improves.

Before we all jump on the bandwagon, lets look back to the release of the Pentium 4. If I remember right, the PIII beat out the P4 due to the advance instructions were not being utilized by WIN98, 2000, ect... It was not until XP started getting updates did it really take off. We have window's 8 coming out soon, so lets just wait this one out. The FX8150 might be a good option for all you guys who bought 890 or newer chipsets.
Hopefully software improvements in the consumer market will utilize the potential of the new CPU architecture.

I did i expected Amd to make a competitive processor at a competitive price. They failed to do so. I'd say the bulldozer competition is more in line with the Phenom II x6 then the I5 and I7 meaning the 8150fx should cost 199.99$. I never expected a Intel killer all i wanted was the single-threaded performance of the first gen I7 with the Multithreading performance around the 2600K. And i expected this processor to overclock like crazy because marketing slapped the FX name on it and Amd talks about it so much. I was not expecting IPC to be lower on the Phenom while the Multithreading performance on average is a 2500K while needing twice the cores and 300mhz more. I was also not expecting bad power consumption. Overall i hope W8 and PD fixes a lot of this stuff. but i just don't know how Amd is going to lower the TDP on a 32nm die when a processor is over 2B transistors.
