Opteron Vs. Xeon

I'm looking to set up a high powered server to run a role playing game server with 100+ people. I'm have never built a server before so what would be the better processor to go with two Opteron 246's or 2 Xeon 3.0EA ghz

I'd guess opteron, but you never know for sure when you run a single (server) app. Your best bet is to benchmark your specific application on both machines (or a P4 and A64 to get a rough idea).

Cache and bandwidth, go with XEON with lots of RAM for gaming servers.
