I would like to know what I can change about this build to make it cheaper, I know there's plenty of room for adjustments. I don't know if I will OC or not yet, I would like to think I may. I have a 1080p monitor. I will be playing Cod, Sports games, Minecraft, and other games. I'd like to play on high settings if possible the highest, but I understand if I cant achieve that. I would like this to be under $800. I plan on ordering this coming weekend, as in tomorrow or Sunday. I live in MO, US. Any reliable online retailer works for me. I was going to try to do a cheap build, and upgrade it as I go, but I think I'm just going to throw my head back and get a mid range rig. Thanks for the help.

You're below 800 with this config
I agree that you should drop the network and audio cards
This HDD is well worth it, its gonna be quite a bit faster than the 32mb cache ones
Just stick with a Hyper 212 EVO and add another push/pull fan if you want lower temps

I'd change the case to a USB3.0 one, gives you more flexibility in the future and it's not like they are hard to find.

I'm not really sure why you need a soundcard. I get why someone would spend $100 or whatever on a high end one, if that's their thing, but I'd imagine there's not going to be much difference between that one and the motherboard one.

Similar thoughts extend to the network card.

650W PSU is overkill really, dropping down to 500-550 is fine for that setup. The Rosewill Capstone is a nice model though.

If you're near St Louis... Brentwood has a store by the name of Microcenter. Going there, would save you another $80 off this price (buy the CPU and MOBO there). This is a more affordable, and better performing build than the one you have listed(mainly due to GPU upgrade-and you get free games with this GPU). I added on an OS, you can remove if you don't need it. Just want you to include that cost if you haven't thought about it.

A few points:

1) You don't need a sound card or a wired lan card.
2) The GPU in this build will make the 660 look like a toy. It's worth the $30 upgrade (especially when you consider the free games)
3) The PSU is the backbone of your system. I gave you a very high quality, semi-modular PSU. The only negative is the 8pin power cord is a little short if you have to mount the PSU right side up. You can fix this with an extension, they cost a few dollars (Saw one on microcenter clearance rack 4 days ago, for $3).
4) The cooler in this build is enough, you won't need anything more.
5) If you want to save money, I'll put together a build that won't allow you to overclock, but will perform as good as this does at stock speeds.
6) This will play most all games on ultra settings.

Yep, take off windows (which you don't have on either build), and I'm around $900, and CPU+Mobo = -$50 off mobo plus $189 for CPU.

They were still running the mobo -$50 a couple of weeks ago. Could always call to confirm.

So with the two, I'm around $800 ($850?) without an OS. I could've slapped some cheaper parts in there to get him to the $800, but instead I gave him a best bang for his buck build that's only slightly over budget (and still cheaper than his initial).

That ASUS board in your build might be a great value for the OP, too! At microcenter, that board would be $59! Otherwise, it's not $109 on newegg, and I would take the ASRock over it. If OP goes to microcenter, I would absolutely substitute the board in your build.

I would still grab the LK over the Extreme 4 since the LK is on a good sale and checking MC site shows they have the lK for $20 cheaper

The 7870XT is a great buy unless he really want phsyX/CUDA

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I actually live 3 hours away from STL, so I won't be going to a microcenter, lol.

I think I may be asking too much to get this under $800ish I think I will be using my original build with a few changes that have been suggested by a couple of threads I have read for the last few weeks.

You dont need those because newer mobo's nowadays have built in 1's... =) And if you guys want to know if MC still have that cpu/mobo combo -$50 on purchase the answer would be "Yes", because i just bought mine yesterday and im using my newly built gaming rig! And I LOVE IT!

I would only pick it if it was cheaper. It's not cheaper unless he goes to microcenter, which is the point I was making. If he goes to microcenter, I'd get the Asus board, otherwise I'd stick with the ASRock.

I doubt he'll miss it, as I'm sure he'd rather have a better card.


Yeah, I like that PSU as well. The only issue comes from the MIR. If OP will actually send it in, it's worth the $20. If he wouldn't, I'd rather spend $10 and get the G550.

If you think I picked the RAM related to it's ability to fit with the cooler, you're mistaken.
