Original xbox hard drive replacement

Hello my friend would like to switch out a hard drive from his non working original xbox to a working original xbox, there are no differences in the type of xbox, they both look like this http://www.technobuffalo.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Xbox-console.jpg . What I am wondering is how I would do this. (I know how to take it out just didnt know if there was anything extra that I would have to do).

The screws that are hidden underneath the labels are tamper evident and will display a checkered pattern. To make the pattern less visible use a heat gun or hairdryer to soften the adhesive. Also when taking out the hard drive make sure to NOT work on a carpeted surface. Also make sure to wear an ESD wrist band as a static discharge will ruin the internal components.

The hard drives are tied to the MB through lock codes. You will probably need to mod the system before it will recognize the replacement drive. There are steps that say this can be done without modding, but I have not attempted them so I don't know how hard it is to find the utilities.

Can I swap the hard drives without modding it and if so how? (im asking this to see if anyone else has tried the above solution).
