Hello fellow computer enthusiasts!

Short: Any advice/suggestions for:
-Moving an OS from Samsung SSD 1TB to 2TB and/or:
-adding a 6TB WD drive (first time with GDP/UEFI)

Long:
Having built my PC in 2014, I am giving it a few more years by upgrading bits: but as this one involves the OS HDD, I thought I would ask for any pre-warnings/ advice/ gotchas before I start.

My big question is will there be a problem moving my Windows OS from a Samsung 840 EVO 1TB to a 860 EVO 2TB? I understand Samsung as great migration software: but does it work if you are migrating the OS HDD!!??

My hard drives are getting full so considering migrating OS HHD from 1TB SSD to 2TB SSD, and for my backup drive moving from WB Black 2TB to 6TB Black.

To be clear, only the backup drive will increase above 2TB, but will be my first venture into UEFI/GPT hard drives for the Backup drive.

System:
Win 7- 64 Bit (Windows 10 is a devil)
OS on Samsung 840 1TB EVO- (looking to Mirror/migrate to 860 EGO 2TB)
Current backup drive WD 2TB (looking at moving to WD 6TB)
MOBO: Asus Maximus Hero 7 with 16GB ram

Any Questions or Clarifications, please ask and I can post them!

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance! 

Solution
For the C drive migration, everything goes.

Just like this:
-----------------------------
Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the...

Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe all partitions on it.
This will probably require the commandline diskpart function, and the clean command.

Ask questions if anything is unclear.
-----------------------------

For the secondary drive, a simply copy/paste, and swap drive letters around after.

Solution
When a person asks "How?", it is customary to give some instructions and tools to do it with.
Not just a bunch of words that have nothing to do with the procedure in question.

'boot strap'?
oh sorry boot strapping is Quite simple WAt youl need is a windows PE disk usb and boot frome there you can use a clone option with the microsoft licence to swap drive(s) that is all

Thank you for the suggestion. Both are Samsung SSD's so first step is to try a Migration from Samsung from SSD to SSD, hence my post to ask if there was any gotchas if it was an OS/boot SSD

THANK YOU! I will try this. When you typed "Everything Goes" at the start I thought you meant I have to start from scratch and almost fell off my chair!, lol

Lol, one of the reasons I stayed with Samsung for the new drive is because of their excellent software to migrate (so I have heard).

The other is that I was happy that I have had no problems with the Samsung EVO for 6 years! (and the health of the drive is still "good" with only 30 TBW!) - perfect to fix Dad's dinosaur computer for some speed...! lol

The secondary drive(s) are just backup (old spinning type) drives. That is just a simple copy and paste all, unless Samsung Data migration works on old spinning drives as well? (If not I just run a new backup and copy and paste files anyway)

That Samsung tool won't work on a non-Samsung spinning drive.
Just copy/paste. And do that in chunks, not necessarily the whole thing at once.

For the "other drives", it is probably OK to leave optical drives connected.

The Samsung Data Migration is great. But also the Macrium Reflect. I've used both, to good results.
Macrium is the basis for my entire backup routine.

Any particular reason for the change from the 840 to the 860?
You'll see little if any performance difference.

I notice my MOBO supports one M.2 slot. I have never used this and it is gaining popularity since I built my second PC back in 2014.

Would you get a Samsung M.2 SSD instead for the C: migration instead of the 860EVO SATA SSD?

That 'everything' referred to the whole contents of the C drive.
Rather than "just the OS (just windows)", as many people wish to try to do.

I understand if they have multiple partitions it may be tricky. But my C; is just one drive, and I would just like to migrate it to a bigger drive! I try to keep things simple and not "over-egg the pudding!" :)

The SATA versions of an M.2 drive are exactly the same speed as your 2.5".
Same drive, different package.

You don't get any performance increase until you move up to an NVMe drive, like the Samsung 970 EVO.
Much more expensive per GB. And for a LOT of users, no real performance benefit.

hmmm,
as an example in Oz (AUD):

Samsung 970 EVO PLUS (MZ-V7S2T0BW) 2TB M.2 SSD Solid State Drive
$615.00

and

Samsung 860 EVO (MZ-76E2T0BW) 2TB SATA III SSD Solid State Drive
$429.00

I stick with my plan "A" as posted then! :) 😛

🤣😆

Ah, the whole thing at once is great just before bed! :)
(until you wake up to the "large file", some other prompt box, etc! 😆)

Does Macrium do raw copy backups as well?

I use Norton for auto backups (x2) but also raw copies for easier access to individual files (so I don't have to extract a single file from a Norton backup library).

Touch wood, I have never had to access either backup! 👍😁

and runs another raw copy backup now, lol

"raw copy?
Unsure of what you're referring to. It does do a forensic sector copy if desired.

Macrium will do whole drive, or partition, and also folders.

And for a full drive Image, you can mount that as a drive letter and retrieve an individual file if needed.

For me, "raw copy" means:

right click, "copy", right click "paste"

and repeat x2 for another HDD and a removable external HDD!

😀😛

Hence why I like your picture!

The samsung ssd migration app is ONLY for moving a Windows C drive.
It is simplicity itself when going from 1tb to 2tb.
You install the new ssd, run the app and set the boot order to the new 2tb ssd.
You download the app and instructions here:

To come back and close the loop.
All done successfully: SSDs thanks to Samsung Migration.
1TB SSD Windows moved to 2TB SSD Windows done AOK.
1TB SSD now gathering dust.
1TB HDD copied to 2TB HDD AOK.
2TB HDD copied to 6TB HDD AOK.
1TB HDD now gathering Dust.

I really need to sort through my stuff and delete some useless stuff instead of always backing it up!
😆
